NEWTOWN, Conn.—The National Shooting Sports Foundation, trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, calls the 3.6 percent rise in paid hunting license holders for 2009 one of the most encouraging signs for hunting in recent years.

"This is great news for our industry and everyone associated with hunting," said Steve Sanetti, president and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "Many efforts are at work to build hunting participation, and they are paying off. More people are enjoying the outdoors and sharing the tradition of hunting with family and friends. Also, more hunting license sales translate into more funds for wildlife conservation."

I thought the State of Colorado had to spend a bunch of money to encourage more A-wipes to come out here and ride around on ATVs. Now you tell me this?

If there are so many elk, why can't I hunt archery season then go rifle as well until I kill a bull? Kinda makes a person think they are just after the NR $ both on tag fees and the $ spent while chasing wapiti.

I need to see these commercials.

3.6% increase in lic. sales ................and a 36% decrease in public land access?! More folks in smaller spaces. Higher fees, and less opportunity. 'Great news for our industry and hunting'....means we have to wait longer to draw. In another 10 years we will open the reg book and apply for a PLO.

Those commercials tout Colorado's OTC elk tags and the vast amount of public lands open to those tags. I've seen them 5 or 6 times in the last month. I'm all for OTC, it allows me and a few friends to actually hunt out west. We really don't see that much pressure where we are but then again those that I've talked to about the area tell me I'm crazy hunting there when there are easier places to get an elk!

Just think of it this way Dink....each NR tag alone subsidizes a covey of cheap resident tags. Add another 30 bucks or so for the ATV sticker...at least 100 bucks for forgotten gear or Rocky Mt logo'd sweatshirts...50 bucks for a reasonable ration of Coors Lite, 50 bucks for a tough steak, 30% higher fuel, sherpa tips, a 300 buck trip to the emergency room for altitude sickness....etc.

...c'mon man!;)

I really think it is a positive. The number of hunters nationwide has been steadily decreasing for over a decade now. Fewer and fewer voices each year to defend our passion from the ever present anti-hunting crowd.

I think demographically the number of male hunters probably still shows a decline, but there are more and more women signing on every year.

Probably the best voice to silence the anti-hunter crowd is a woman hunting to help put food on the table to feed the family.

My 2 cents. Nathan

So if each set of 5 residents each paid $145 for a elk license we can get rid of one NR elk hunter? I'm all in!!;)
