My son will be shooting a .270 this fall and this will be his first season elk hunting. What would you recommend for an elk hunting bullet? I don’t reload, so I need to find some factory ammo. I currently have some Federal 130gr fusions, but I’m thinking He might need some thing in 150gr. and maybe a different bullet than the fusions.

Not sure how you feel about some of the monos, if the rifle likes 130 you might hunt down some of the hornady cx or Barnes ttsx’s.

Partitions/accubonds are always a good place to start, federal premium with their trophy bonded tips have been fairly easy to find lately too

Here ya go...this will kill everything in the lower 48 and most of AK and Africa

It's probably going to boil down to what factory ammo you can find, and then what the gun shoots. I'd be confident with any 140-150gr hunting bullet that shoots well in the gun. I've used bonded bullets and standard cup and jacket bullets to take elk with a 270, so I don't put as much thought into bullet construction as I do accuracy. So grab what you can and shoot some groups.

My son took his bull using Federal Premium ammo with 150 Nosler Partitions. I can assure you that 1000's of elk get killed every year using plain old dinosaur Core-Lokt ammo in 130 grain.
270 win is a awesome elk hunting round, 130-150 IMO any federal round , premium or classic is bueno! If folks shoot elk with the hornday ELD that’s proof that even cheap cupcore will work on elk
not rocket science

I shoot elk with a 150 gr, buddy shoots them with a 130 gr. I think he has killed more, but I don’t know whose got a better avg. a good shot with any .270 round will kill an elk. Depending on your kid’s size and flinchyness, I’d go 130

Suggest you try the search feature, it just showed this for search term 270 elk:

150gr Nosler Accubond LR in .270 on elk

I have searched endlessly on the internet for someone with experience in this area, but I am not finding much. Before anyone tries to change my mind, I am 100% using my .270 on an elkhunt this fall. There will be no caliber changes. However, my gun shoots 150gr Nosler ABLR really well. The one...

    .270 as an elk round

Every time I've taken my .270 elk hunting I've gotten skunked, so therefore, it is NOT a viable elkround.

    .270 as an elk round

I've shot a few elk with Federal partitions in 150 grains out of my .270. Worked just fine.

    .270 as an elk round

I’ve shot lots of elk with my 270, used 130 gr federal trophy bonded tips for past 10 years with great results

What Old/Odd Chamberings Have You Actually Used To Kill Big Game Animals ?

If they fit the criteria then I have killed most of my rifle deer with a 30-06 or 270, and an elkwith a 30-06

    270 Weatherby ammo

I love the 270 Wby Mag. Not sure what ammo to use for Elkup to 500 yards.

150gr Nosler Accubond LR in .270 on elk

We will be using a 270 this year for pronghorn, elk, and deer. Everything we shot out of it seems to perform well. You should have no issues killing and elkwith the 150 grain Nosler bullets.

    Winchester fail safe bullets

I used to use them in .270. Was a very good bullet for larger game like elk. Took quite a few elkwith them and a few deer. I don’t believe it’s produced an longer. Was certainly accurate enough

    Shiras moose caliber

My wife drew a MT moose tag this year and we’ll be taking her .270 with 130gr ttsx - it’s been a great setup for elk, and looking forward to taking her first moose with it!

    .270 as an elk round

All I use is a .270. My current rifle loves 130 gr Hornady SSTs. Killed elk just fine, beautifully expanded bullets when I’ve recovered them. FWIW, my old rifle loved 130 gr Core-Lokts. Also no issue getting the job done on elk.

    Lame Duck Question

Well I don't know why you wouldn't use the 06 for the animals you listed but you if you opt for the .270 you will not be disappointed. My son has used a .270 for everything from jackrabbits to antelope to mule deer to bull elk and the .270 performed beautifully. (y)

    Winchester fail safe bullets

I also used them in a .270 in the 90's. I took a fair number of elkwith them, and they worked very well. I was bummed when Winchester stopped making that loaded ammo.
