2022 Spring Bears

Initially joined the forum researching elk, but the love/hate relationship I have with bear hunting got the best of me and down the rabbit hole I went. Spent a lot of time hunting idaho and a bit of time in harvest objective units here in Utah. Love all the pics, can’t wait to get out again now!

Got back from NE Oregon last night. There was still a LOT of snow in our usual area. My dad talked to someone who said it was the most snow he's seen this late in 25 years. We even got more snow the first couple of days we were there. The main road was snowed up and impassible beyond the turnoff into our camp area. The hillsides that were open didn't have a lot of green-up. We took one drive down along the Imnaha River, but it's hard to give up an area you know well, and after that we stayed up around camp. Deer and elk were plentiful. My dad and uncle saw one elk calf. Frogs were croaking in the puddles of snowmelt. Even saw a couple Warthogs of the A-10 variety. Then the last two days it suddenly turned to spring and warmed up. I left camp in a T-shirt yesterday and never needed a coat. Butterflies suddenly appeared. The grass was growing.

Oh yeah, bears. We saw nothing until Tuesday evening. We were hiking and watching along a snowed-up road, when I finally spotted the only bear of the trip. It was quite a ways higher than all the areas we were watching on an open hillside with snowfields on both sides. There was nothing green up there. Apparently it didn't read the script. It was not in a place we felt like we could get up to, so we watched it, and that was the extent of our bear hunting. (It did look small, so I will put a virtuous spin on this by saying we passed on a small sow. Of course.)

Next year....

Took my oldest to Alberta last week. Kind of a graduation present. Had a great time and saw quite a few bears. He shot 2 bears and I arrowed 1. Sitting over bait is way different than the spot and stalk he is used to. I think he really liked seeing the bears up close but watching them die and hearing the death moan was not his favorite which I completely understand. Anyway, had a great trip in a beautiful country.

Look at the level of evolution.......

To..... whatever this is.

That evolution might be worse than backcountry elk hunters from the 1880s to 2020s bruh.
Functional and fashionable, I think you guys are just projecting your microagressions on me because of some sort of deep rooted envy.

But it's okay guys, I forgive you.

Leroy... I like you but no that's not fashionable maybe in Texas but, not the north country.

Just returned home from bear camp. Plenty of good beer/ whiskey and camp fire times. The bears cooperated too. Our party of four saw over a dozen bears in three days. My brother and I both passed on some chocolate phased ones (actually black colored bears seem to be the minority where i hunt) but my cousin was down for any bear since this was his first hunt. He had one of the more manly pack outs I’ve witnessed.
