A little over a week back from my '12 caribou hunt. Second float trip in as many years. A buddy and I floated a river in the Brooks Range and had a good time. The previous two years I had stellar weather, so I knew my luck would run out soon. And it did, not that weather was horrible everyday but there were a few days that weren't much fun. Seems lots of folks in AK dealing with bad weather statewide during their September hunt this year.
We saw a fair number of animals the first two days, but everything was up high on the ridges a few miles from camp. Mostly cow / calf / young bull groups. On the evening of day 2 my buddy spotted a group of 22 bulls across the river from camp. We got on them early the next morning and pulled off a great stalk. My buddy harvested two animals, I took one. On day 4 we started our float and covered 52 miles in 3 days. Didn't see another caribou after starting our float, glad we were pretty much done hunting at that point. Seven bears seen but nothing within stalking distance or the right situation. Some pics of the trip....
