Leupold BX-4 Rangefinding Binoculars

14 Peaks

Definitely an awesome documentary; crazy how climbing Everest was barely a footnote.

I could have done without the mom/family narrative - I skipped over most of that. The heli-rescue shots were badass.

About halfway through it. I’m not in the climbing but it’s still pretty damn impressive.

Here I will add a hunting story, off topic.

I stayed at a host parents house while in Kathmandu. I would get up early to wonder the streets to watch the city awaken. The people did their offerings very early, putting out tributes to the Hindu gods.

One day my host father offered to accompany me to a Buddhist temple, across town.
I agreed and the next day we traveled in a three wheeled cart/taxi to a large Buddhist temple. I watched as the people circled the giant prayer wheel. It was interesting to see before the tourist day started.

On the way back, my host father asked if I wanted to meet his father in law a Gurkha. I said great.

His father in law was a tall man. Nearly 6 ft. Very large for a Nepalese. He had fought in World War Two in Burma for the British.

He then showed my his hunting photos of hunting Bengal tigers and hippos and rhinosauers as they call them.

South western Nepal is Chitwan forest- where Kipling wrote the Jungle Book.

Most people can’t make it to base camp of any of those peaks. Everest basecamp is at 17,000 ft and takes 10+ days to trek into. Lots of people fail to get to the starting line.

Finished it last night. Unreal.

Watched “The Alpinist” the other night as well. Another incredible documentary.
I just watched the first 30 minutes or so of the Alpinist and thought to myself, there’s no way this guy is still living. I googled him and sure enough he died while climbing, actually on a descent. There’s a point in the documentary where one of the climbers says that half of the great climbers die while climbing. It scares me just watching it.

Those guys are insane and some great footage. I can’t remember which mountain it was but the one they summited in one day, hung over, on a hike that takes most people four or five days to ascend was wild. It also showed their character though how many people they went back up to save or tried to save while risking their own lives in a major way.
