Went for the weekend hunting bears with a couple of buddies. Weekend was slow. Not a ton of bears out. Saw about 4 or 5 a day. Figure they probably were in the timber hunting fawns as the does are starting to drop now. Did see one really good shooter. Easily a 6'6"+ boar. His belly was almost...
Bear Meat - GOOD! :) Needs to be frozen for quite a while and then cooked good. Not the kind of meat that you throw on the Barby and cook med rare. Make sure it's cooked WELL.
Bear Fat - BAD!!! Adds a very aweful flavour. I debone and cut my own meat. I trim as much fat and grissle as I can. I...
Moosie,
I'm using a Canon ZR90 digital video camera. It has a neat little photo button that allows me to take stills as I am viewing the video on playback. I can also take stills just like a regular digital as well. Seems like those ones are a little better quality than just taking them off the...
When the US shut the border to Canadian Beef, there were other less known closures as well. At first they banned wild meat, capes, horns and antlers that US hunters shot in Canadian guided hunts. This hurt the guiding industry pretty hard. They lifted the ban on wild meat, capes and such but for...
Was told by a friend that this matched set is worth $400 on Ebay. He said even 40 inch moose sheds are selling for $200 or more. I just wonder how the heck they ship them across the border with the whole BSE thing. If you know how to ship them and $400 doesn't sound too steep then I may be...
Here's a great matched set. 52 inches wide and grosses 186. Not too shabby for a Southern BC bull. hump hump
Here's some pics of most of today's finds together.
2 skulls over 20 in one season. WOW! Geeze, I live in some Big Bear country, have killed plenty and seen a whole whack more killed and have yet to see a 20 incher. Just killed my personal best this week. Just cleaning up the skull as we speak. 19 and some change. Far cry from 20 though. ;)
Here in BC baiting is illegal so spot and stalk and running them with hounds is the only way to kill them. I have killed all my bears by spot and stalk. Best bet is to drive logging roads glassing cutblocks. Forest Companys are required to grass seed all cutslopes, ditchlines, skidtrails...
Never really weighed any of the many bears I've seen killed. When guiding the Europeans would always ask me how much their bear weighed and I always gave them a line of BS as to my guess. I guess it doesn't help in my guessing when I normally skin and quarter right on site because...
Moosie,
Leave it to you to notice the typo. The actual measurement was 7 feet 4 inches. Funny thing is that he really doesn't compare to that brown I saw last week  Might have to try some predator calling and see if I can draw that one off of the private land he's living on...
Thanks for the nice comments.
DK,
I'll probably just get him tanned (might even do it myself) and hang him from a hook or something from the ceiling. Have a 6 foot+ brown rug mounted and have my wolf and cougar at the taxidermist so I am running out of wall space. Don't want to eat up too much...
I got lucky today. Saw a Big 'Un at work today and I decided to pull the trigger. He's my biggest bear to date. He measures 7+" nose to tail and his skull green scores 19 4/16.
Tuff,
I didn't shoot it cause it was on private land feeding in a field. I had to slam on the brakes and grab the binos because he had the size and the look of a grizz. These pics are clipped off of the video and I had the digital zoom maxed because he was a good 250+ yards away. I have no doubt...
Moosie,
When I first saw this little guy I thought he was just a big cub. But Momma was nowhere to be seen. I came back 4 hours later and he was still all by himself. Normally momma doesn't kick out last years cubs until mid-May. Thinking she must have winter-killed in the den. Surprised this...
