If you are just looking for a nice buck maybe try the Canyon Creek area. I have seen many nice bucks in that area. If nothing there you like you’re close enough to hit Elk Mountain.
Hang in there! This is the worst part, the not knowing what’s next. Once everyone adjusts and things stabilize it gets better. And kids are amazing in what they can handle and accept. My son had his 1st seizure the day before his 3rd birthday and then a serious of them until the doctors figured...
Go for it. A trail head is just a parking spot. You have a ton of choices once you get down the trail. If you see someone, respect that and head in another direction. Good luck!
These look so cool. And my kids really want one. However every time I’m almost ready to buy I picture all the plants and herbs we have nurtured along the edge of the patio. Then the picture shifts to a barren salt flat after a couple of years of intense bug/kid salt battles......
Mostly what others have said, they are there but not really enough to hunt. Although, a few years ago I had a cow tag and hunted the Buck Creek area for a couple of days, north and west of Jarbidge. There were grouse everywhere. That’s unit 71 now that I think about it though.
They have now closed the forest east to O’Neil Basin, which includes unit 72. The closure said through Sept 30 unless lifted before. I doubt it would last that long but you never know.
Definitely do your homework, map work and ask specific questions. The USFS map is good, they will mail you one...
Yes the Mountain Cty and Jarbidge Ranger districts are closed east to the O’Neil Basin. Today was supposed to be cooler with higher RH and less wind so they were hoping to get it slowed down. I sure hope so. The closure is until Sept 30 unless it’s lifted before then.
Here are some pics. The 1st are Neo1, the 2nd is Monitor (not as many cones as in years past for some reason) and the last are Jarbidge. Sorry, I can’t get these to rotate.
Wytex, the Centennial and Neo1 have another couple weeks I think. The Monitor and Jarbidge maybe a couple more after that. Just a guess. This is really early for them. So far it’s been the end of September into mid-October before they have been ready. We have been down into the 40’s a couple...
The first year we lived there we didn’t see the sun for 167 days. Then it came out one afternoon. We didn’t see it again for 27 days. Unless you like doing everything in a drizzle don’t go. Friends who were raised hunting there say elk hunting is worse than ever. We toughed it out for 7...
I was looking for a stove a couple years ago for my 14X16 Wall tent and found a Kwik Kamp stove on Craigslist. I really like it. Heats fast and holds heat/coals very well. It’s heavy but very well made. I use a Big Buddy heater in the morning to knock the chill off while getting ready. Light the...
We used to pack into the Eagle Cap when I was a kid. We lived in Baker but had friends in Wallowa. It is amazing country. I’d like to go back some day.
