2nd season grind with a perfect ending.

My son and I wrapped up our hunt Sunday morning. I’m feeling particularly blessed right now. This is the first time in a few years that I’ve felt healthy and strong (the “Big C” took me down a rough road since 2019), and this was the demanding hunt I’ve really been needing to feel whole again...

Two new elk hunters, a breath of fresh air

I have no idea who’s side I’m supposed to be on in this thread

    Wow. That’s a character statement

    Repairing roto-molded cooler

I fixed a hole in a kayak with resin/glass fabric. Remove that piece, refill the dented foam, sand (80ish grit) a patch maybe 3-4” larger in diameter than the hole, apply the patch, sand or paint if you want. There are surfboard repair kits that have resin/hardener and a piece of fiberglass...

    Bowmars to change plea tomorrow?

I mean yah, aside from the poaching and shady nutrition companies I’m sure they’re great people.

Little things that will piss off the wife

How about referring to your equal partner in life as “the wife”

    Border crossing hiatus over!

We ate at “Shogunz Pizza” in Rawlins a couple weeks ago. It was pretty darn good pies.

I wish there were more friendliness

Man. I felt that one. I’m going to have to have one of those tough conversations next month.

I wish there were more friendliness

If you don’t want to hunt bad enough to go learn on your own, then you probably wouldn’t be the right type of person to mentor.

I do miss hunting D14 desert bucks, but not that much! Ha.

    Whitetails in North Park?

It’s funny you posted that, because I was coming here to expand on that thread. So it turns out the outfit run by that same kid’s family - who saw the whitetail in Maybell- had a client kill a buck there last fall. Not sure how that works legally, but I sure wouldn’t mind if we had some around...

    Family antelope hunt

My son and I drew very unexpected WY antelope tags this year. I’ve hunted antelope a few times, but am far from an expert. They tend to be very enjoyable, relaxed hunts. The only thing that I don’t like is the “road hunting” component of many antelope hunts. Nothing wrong with it, just not my...

Meateater Close Calls - Free Diving/Spearing Story

I hear yah. I got rolled on by a big White Shark in 6-8 viz. He then disappeared into the murk and I had to swim 150 yards back to boat. That one took me a while to get over. I’d just had my son, and I felt like a selfish prick.

Yah man it’s a wonderful thing to do. I don’t want to put you off. Just go into it with both eyes open and all that.

Meateater Close Calls - Free Diving/Spearing Story

Yah I’d say lung squeeze could be the culprit for the foam. If a blackout has persisted long enough that getting the person to breath doesn’t work (the instinctive centers of the brain that control respiration are out too) then yah. Emergency breathing and/or CPR would come in to play. The...

Meateater Close Calls - Free Diving/Spearing Story

I’ll elaborate: Kicking around with a snorkel is fine. The dreaded questions: “how deep can you dive” and “how long can you hold your breath” have gotten more people killed than you’d imagine. Our bodies have a very special response to being in the water that allows us (all mammals) to hold...

Meateater Close Calls - Free Diving/Spearing Story

It is an accepted method for reviving someone who has blacked out during a dive. Who is the person you were speaking of? I say “blacked out”, not “drowned”, and will explain below. Once blood saturation reaches the level of “blackout”, the part of our physiology that is responsible for the...

    Incredible elk experience

Well today was another Doozy. We ended the morning calling in a spike to 30 feet, and a 6-point to 30 yards…and sent an arrow over his back. Elk fever! Not that I can complain, I was rattled and I’m not even holding a tag!
