My son and I drew very unexpected WY antelope tags this year. I’ve hunted antelope a few times, but am far from an expert.

They tend to be very enjoyable, relaxed hunts. The only thing that I don’t like is the “road hunting” component of many antelope hunts. Nothing wrong with it, just not my bag.

So, since these tags were a gift from the random-draw gods, we decided to have fun with this hunt! Our rule was that we’d hunt these antelope only on foot - park the truck and walk in likely looking areas. This unit has a sizeable Walk-In portion, so I figured we’d be able to get away from the road and have some solitude.

(My wife went too. She decided that antelope hunting is just her style. She loves to hike, and she loves nice weather. She really enjoyed watching antelope, and had a great time!)

We spent two weekends- one rainy and cold, one beautiful - out chasing critters together. It doesn’t get any better.

My two favorite people!

I killed my buck on the first weekend. Wouldn’t you know it, we found him on the way back to the truck after a long, wet morning.

The beauty of having a 17-year-old with you is that you get your buck carried 1/3 mile whole!

Weekend two started with a beautiful day hiking to glassing points and looking over tons of antelope. We figured we found a couple shooters, and came back the next morning to seal the deal.

We spent from about 9:30 to 2:00 bird dogging a buck that my son had his hopes on. We put on about 5 miles and numerous changes in plans (including a SxS driving through the Walk-In that spooked the herd!) before he killed the buck. It all culminated in a slow, steady, crawling stalk to within 250 yards of the bedded buck. Awesome!!

If you zoom waay in, you can see a tiny white speck. That’s the truck when we killed this buck.
We had a blast gutting out the pack back, and celebrated with a cold soda!E46EE083-5ED7-43D4-B7C1-E47E3776C51F.jpeg

This was such a great hunt! I’m sure an antelope expert could have found a bomber in this unit, but for me, the total experience was perfect!!

Nice work!! You sure you don’t miss opening weekend deer back here in SoCal? Haha! Can’t wait to give antelope a shot in the coming years.

Looks like a fun hunt! I can't wait for my son to be old enough to tag along, let alone have his own tag.

Sounds like a great hunt. With any luck and a little praying I will be doin the same with my family in the next few years.
