Montana Deer and Elk Drawing Dilemma

GM you're not supposed to ask those questions unless it's your first post and immediatly after the introduction. I think that's how it goes anyway. You are 3000 and some change too late!

    $1,149.84

Am I the only nr guy who hunts on the Montana side of the MT/ID border with the logic "I'll hunt on the more expensive side of the line, know most nr hunters will be on the cheaper side"? I'll pay a little more, if my thinking is correct. Heck, I drive across the country to do it. When it...

    Rinse Your Meat?

From the animal, to game bags, to cooler/ice. I've never rinsed off any meat in the field. Too much risk of bacteria.

    First Time Buying a Bow

I agree! Before going elk hunting for the first time, I was using a bow the was maybe $350 wrapped up in it, but had killed a good amount of deer with it, and I did have 30 years of bowhunting experience. The guy that I was going with had killed alot of elk, so I told him up front that I had a...

    First Time Buying a Bow

^^^what p_ham said. A good bow shop will set you up once you find one that you like. Alot of shops will try to steer you to a particular bow/brand, like any car salesman would. But try to see what you like. If you haven't shot since Boy Scouts, you will be pleasantly surprised once you...

What made you a great hunter? And other newbie questions.

I'll go with "consistant" hunter, nowhere near great! (1) Learn from a lot of mistakes. (2) Too many great, memorable hunts to pick one. But a challenge has to be part of a "best hunt". (3) Take it slow and learn from experience. Welcome to HT!

    First elk

You call it being "hard headed", my wife calls it being "stubborn", I call it being "persistence"! That's what it takes! Congratulations on a nice public land bull!

    Apparently every unit everywhere sucks

Do you mind me asking what state you're a biologist in? I will agree that the public land here is nothing remotely like the public land in western states. But, if you can find consistent success hunting eastern states public land, you won't have any problems out west as long as you put the...
