    Poaching Rates: Any Guesses

Archer is right, encounters with NMGF are few and far between. I've only ever had one encounter with a warden while big game hunting. I've been checked twice while hunting birds and a lot more often while fishing. At that rate, there is very little deterrent against poaching. I've never seen...

NM Mule Deer Unit 32 near Roswell Nov 10-14

I live in Roswell and hunt Unit 32 just about every year. As others have pointed out, be prepared to see a LOT of other hunters. Expect to see campers in some of the best deer country too. There are over 600 rifle tags per hunt, so it's just a lot of pressure for an area that holds low deer...

    Hot Feet

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I live and hunt in NM. I got a pair of Danner Vital 8" non-insulated boots, but they're incredibly hot on my feet. I'm sure the temperatures down here in southern NM don't help that, but is there anything I can do to cool my feet or help keep them dry...

    NM Unit 48

My understand and experience is that if it is a county maintained road, you can use it to cross private in order to get to public. It also cannot be blocked if it is county maintained. So, you're on the right track looking for roads that are numbered/named. I'm not familiar with Unit 48, so...

    Nm elk unit 5b, 28, 48, and 55

I would suggest calling NM Game and Fish about unit 28. From what I can tell, you need an access permit to get into it and I don't know how hard those are to come by. Here is a link to the Unit 28 map...

    Remington 870 Super Mag?

Thanks CampRipley, I appreciate the info. Beginnerhunter- I never thought about it. I just measured some shells and it looks like a 2 3/4" shell measures 2.25". My 3" shells measure 2.5".

    Remington 870 Super Mag?

Just to clarify, the serial number I'm referencing is the full number on the side of the receiver above the trigger. Should I be looking at the 2-3 digit code on the barrel?

    Remington 870 Super Mag?

No, the serial number ends with 4d, which is one of the things that confused me. The magnum should end with "M" and the Super Mag should end with "A".

    Remington 870 Super Mag?

For folks who have a Remington 870 Super Mag and who know it is set up for 3.5" 12ga shells, could you tell me how big (long) is your ejection port? I found what is supposed to be a Remington 870 Super Mag at a good price. The bolt has the "groove" on the side of it, and the side of the gun...

    Unit 32 Road Issues

As an update, these three road closure applications are in roughly the same area on Picacho Road. The sections of the roads do cross both State and BLM land, so we will lose access if these are approved. The New Mexico Wildlife Federation has a petition you can sign on their website. You can...

    Unit 32 Road Issues

Also, if some has better Google-Fu than me, I'd love to know what the three new road closure applications are for.

    Unit 32 Road Issues

Just got an email that I thought I would pass along. "Call to All Sportsmen & Women: Public Lands Under Threat The Chaves County contingent of anti-public land hunters are at it again. Last year, they successfully shut off access to a five-mile stretch of Felix Canyon Road, a taxpayer-owned...

    Hello from Eastern NM

From what I remember growing up, we found the pheasant around Clovis although I have to admit we never tried our hand around Portales. I'd imagine if you ask around you could find some farmers willing to let you hunt their fields for pheasant. I work with a guy who hunts deer out your way...

    Hello from Eastern NM

Welcome! Interesting you moved to Portales and are happy there. Is it the wide open landscape that you appreciate? I have a good friend who moved out here from PA and that's what she enjoyed about the area. Good luck with the application this year. Should have some decent odds for deer...

    Going it alone

Couple thoughts for you: 1. Instead of a guide/outfitter, you could always stay in a hotel room and hunt solo. I know some of the units down in South Central NM have hotels that put you 5-10 minutes from elk country. Heck, in one of Randy's recent videos they stayed at a rented cabin for the...

Tips for getting in shape for backcountry

This is a bit unconventional, but it will leave your legs burning and have you gasping for air. Go to an empty parking lot, put your car/truck in neutral and push it. Can be done walking or going all-out as a "sprint". Obviously keep safety in mind, so doing this with a partner who can stop...

    NM application info.

That's a wonky part of NM's draw I've never quite understood. I applied for a deer tag a few years back and didn't draw. When they released the list of leftover tags, my hunt was on there. To this day I don't understand how/why I didn't get a tag for that hunt. I called G&F and their answer...

Dairy Queen Closing, Big Fin changes hunting plans....

Antelope is about the only reason Fin would find himself in Hobbs, NM so not much of a loss there. He could stop at DQ in Carlsbad or Roswell on the way, although the last time I went to DQ in Roswell they were out of dilly bars.

Know some people who were in Unit 34 last weekend. They said the bulls were bugling pretty good.

    clean bore vs fouled

I'm fairly new to muzzleloaders, but I quickly realized it's clean bore for me. When I first started trying to sight in my T/C Impact, my groups were 3-4" at 50 yards, which was unacceptable coming from a rifle background. Started cleaning the barrel between shots and groups came down to...
