I am an Independent who has voted Republican and Democrat in the past depending on the quality of the candidates.
From my personal perspective 2023 was a very good year....my retirement portfolio far outpaced inflation, my mom is still alive at 101 years,
I am enjoying every day, living the...
Been foggy every morning for at least a week.
Jump shot this lone goose from a Montana spring creek yesterday morning.
And shot this one in the fog last week while chasing roosters and a flock flew over low in the fog.
Also for the 6th year in a row, the United State lead the world in oil production.
2023 was a record year with the United States producing more oil than any country in history.

Another reason I like athletic labs.
I pulled feathers on my second shot of a double,
hun disappeared over the hill with the covey.
Pup was on the bird and came back with cripple about 200 yards over the hill.
The unemployement rate in the US was less than 4 percent for the year.
The S & P 500 gained almost 25% for the year
The inflation rate dropped substantially and is approaching the Fed's target rate of 2%
and is less than Canada, Mexico, much of Europe, Russia, etc.
Gas is less than $3 per...
I like labs built like pointers, deep chest, can hunt several days in a row no problem.
My routine is to hunt pup 2 days in a row, then hunt the 8-year old 1 day, then pup 2 days in a row.
I started hunting with English Setters and Vislas.
I prefer labs because of there versatility.
Late season roosters in a sea of cattails? Perfect for a lab
Drop a bird in water, not a problem.
Need to hunt big open country, not a problem, I simply whistle sit the lab when she gets birdy at 200...
My Granite Gear 60-liter pack came in handy this morning.
Out chasing roosters in the fog, flock of geese came over low and never saw me...#4 steel from the 20 gauge.
Packed up the goose and back to chasing roosters in the fog.
Jump shooting a spring creek in MT, this mallard flushed way out of range, flew 300 yards
and then quickly dropped back into the creek. I had a good mark on the spot.
When we got there, the mallard dived in a pool and pup jumped in and caught her.
I think she either heard a hawk or saw a hawk...
My hunting partner is a professional photographer and takes awesome photos.
I have only cheap cameras but sometimes I get lucky.
This grouse was taken with a 20 year old digital camera from our upper deck,
I was lucky as the grouse was only 5 feet away.
And this grouse was drumming in our...
Post-pandemic inflation is global.
Here is a comparison with some other countries from Oct 2023:
Russia 6.7%
United Kingdom 4.7%
France 4.0%
Germany 3.8%
Mexico 4.3%
United States 3.2%
Canada 3.1%
At least gas is less than $3 a gallon here in Montana.
Now in my 60s, I bought the following in my 20s-30s
30-40 years of heavy use:
1) Helly Hansen Commercial Rain Gear
2) Filson Tin Chaps
3) Dana Designs Arcflex Backpack (in my avatar)
4) Leki treking poles
5) Bombproof Otterbox
6) MSR whisperlite stoves
7) Rapala fillet glove to prevent cuts...
I don't know if your interested in TV.
I enjoyed the Hulu series "The Bridge" based out of El Paso.
I also enjoyed "Friday Night Lights" another series based in Texas.
We have been flushing lots of shorteared owls pheasant hunting here in Montana.
I think they migrate. In some fields it is not uncommon to flush 30-50 shortears which is a neat thing to see.
They nest here in the summer:
I also think the Microtine population is at a high cycle as I see them...
Required in Alaska.
Illegal to pack out the antlers before all the meat has been packed out.
Also in some units deboning is not legal which can be problematic with moose hindquarters weighing > 100 lbs.
Years ago we won a small claims court suit against a contractor who did not complete a job.
The court allowed a "bank sweep" of banks inside the state as part of the judgement.
So in that case, having a bank account outside the state might avoid the "bank sweep"
The court also allowed us to...
