Your Favorite Backyard Hunts

River is a mile and a half from the house so it’s a place I go to unwind often.

Mostly it’s just exercise, but every now and then it pays off !

So many great adventures on the rivers chasing birds over the years with dad and the boys. I will say I'll always cherish the bird hunts with dad. He started the monster that's created now haha.

I can't get enough of the Tooths the they present so much adventure its impossible to try and accomplish even in a lifetime. Being able to hit them within 45 minutes is pretty sweet to.

I do a lot of my hunting around home in the suburbs, so many of my hunts are literally backyard hunts. These birds are on some ground in the process of becoming a backyard.


My favorite hunt ever was yesterday in the aforementioned backyard. My son and I have been on a dozen or so hunts with just pictures and good memories to show for it. That changed yesterday. Here he is with one of those birds up close - with rooftops in the background.



He was genuinely on cloud nine. Not the most well composed trophy photo but it’s the first photo I took and his smile says it all. Smiling doesn’t come naturally for him and that’s why I love this photo so much. Hearing “this was the best day ever” unprompted for the 10th time yesterday had me on cloud nine.

I wish I could hunt my backyard as every day after bowhunting mule deer about 30 min from my house I am greeted by 30-50 deer in town and then usually a couple of bucks that seem to taunt me my house.

Ducks and geese have been the best backyard hunt for me. I grew up 5 minutes from a spot that I hunted for years. Can’t seem to find any sheep except in fences around here so I have to come all the way from NC to the Tooth’s. They are a very special place although it’s highly unlikely it will ever be a backyard hunt for me. The wife don’t like cold weather but she lets me go west when I want to so I’ll take that trade off.

Literally shot this one in the very back of the farm I grew up on. I don’t hunt there anymore but I helped my little brother drag his first one out from the same wood lot this year.

Backyard is relative. For stuff that’s 30 minutes from my door, it’s trout fishing, grouse, whitetail deer,
and turkeys ( I have zero interest in
turkeys).





Within a couple hours drive is some of my favorite country Ive ever been in.

I live 2 miles from the Clark and Eau Claire county forest, here in Wisconsin, which comprises approximately 180,000 acres of land open to the public. Along with my family's 400+ acre farm I'm extremely fortunate to have excellent hunting opportunities out my back door, for most things Wisconsin has to offer. Turkeys would be my favorite, locally to hunt. These were all taken within 5 miles of my house

I am super lucky in that I have tons of fishing within 15 minutes of my house. Fishing smallies on the St. Croix River is my favorite "backyard" fishing experience:

Literally back yard hunts from the wilds of NJ...These are simple hunts with my boys behind the house, across the street, or just up the road a bit, and are always the most memorable...

I'm extremely lucky to have some amazing deer hunting right in my backyard. Although I love traveling to hunt, sometimes due to time constraints I have to hunt closer to home which is far from being a bad thing. The following deer were all taken within hiking distance of the house.

My wife's moose, also shot within hiking distance of the house.

If the city wouldn't get on my case I'd have some real backyard hunts with Eurasian collared doves.
