Anyone have any experience with Wyoming Unit 100?
I’m thinking of trying to hunt this district fall of 2021 with my Dad on a cow tag. I’m deploying next year and this will be my next opportunity to hunt elk, and I’d love to share the experience with my Dad who isn’t getting any younger. I hunted SW Montana on a General tag this year. It was a great experience but I was disappointed with the amount of pressure, and it certainly wouldn’t be terrain or a style of hunt I’d recommend for my Dad who is in his mid 60s. He’s in decent shape for his age, but backpacking into the mountains is out of the question.
From what I gather hunting this portion of Wyoming is much more akin to Antelope hunting than elk hunting, the terrain and elevation doesn’t seem quite as hateful as your typical elk hunt, and boasts high success rates.
Another consideration is I could have up to 3 points when I put in for the tag, my Dad up to 2. We could put in for the either sex tag as a first choice and the full price cow tag as a second and though the either sex would be a huge longshot, we have decent odds of drawing the cow tags without dumping our points.
Or we just dump our points and have an almost sure thing draw for the cow tag. I’m leaning toward this, an opportunity to hunt with Dad is more important than some big bull in the future.
Thanks for any input! Interested to hear anyone’s experience with this district and if what I’m thinking seems reasonable.
