WY doe tags

If you'll notice in the above chart, the wy antelope population trend started sliding about the time hunting forums started taking off good.

Forums rising caused rotten winter weather and drought conditions??

(I sorta kid)

No, hunting message boards took doe tags from an after thought with leftover tags in most units, to max hunting pressure on the golden goose.

Pronghorn evolved to handle drought, and winter, not 6.5 creeds.

Was there actually abundant numbers of unsold, unused antlerless tags 10-15 years ago? I know a lot made it into the leftover drawings but they all eventually just got snatched up later on.

You can apply for doe tags or Type 1 tags independently of each other and you can check the box that turns back any doe tags you draw if you don't draw a Type 1 tag on that app.
THANKS. I remembered the check box, thanks for the correction and sorry about bad info

Yes, even buck tags.

I often times would purchase additional doe and buck tags on the last day of the season to help fund the department (no intention of hunting the tags).

How many would you say went unsold, 100's? 1,000's?

I wonder how the department looks at that? I mean obviously they wouldn't issue tags if they didn't think it was the right thing. I guess before those herds were just considered over objective at the time?
I think one of the big reasons for the drastic declines in pronghorn the last decade has to do with all the leftover tags being sold and hunted.

The GF got away with ridiculously high quotas in the past because the tags weren't selling.

IMO, more time and effort needs to be spent figuring out why pronghorn pretty much statewide are in the ditch.

That's sort of what I was getting at. I look at our qoutas here for deer that used to be way less 20 years ago. The number of leftover tags we have now if someone actually tried filling them would be devastating to say the least. The only thing hindering that here imo is access. Little different than wyoming pronghorn, but it's the same principal. All those leftover tags don't hurt anything until they're not leftover anymore.

It also coincides with when the R3 movement really started to gain momentum. Doe antelope were promoted as the cheap and easy way to get introduced to western hunting.

How long before there are PP for does and cows? Has to be coming soon
Would be a huge revenue stream for the WGFD.

I would be in favor of that (maybe $20/point) as well as increased license fees for R and NR doe/fawn and cow/calf tags.

We give away doe/fawn tags and nobody is going to convince me that a doe pronghorn/deer's life is only worth $35.

$48 for an antelope doe tag is joke. If there were leftover tags and an abundance of antelope I think that'd be a fair deal. But it doesn't seem so fair for the antelope at the moment.

i've pointed it out before, but if there is definitely something we do right in colorado it's that you're paying bull/buck prices for a cows/does if you want to shoot one.

you also only get one application with one first choice to use/choose between the two. i think there are even benefits to that beyond the value it puts on females.

I agree. We figured out the antelope doe game toward the end of the good years. My hunting buddy and I were like dang for basically $80 we can shoot 2 does or give $300 for a buck. Ya I’ll come out and hunt does every year. My last 2 trips to Wyoming have been for does and cow elk. I’m just fine filling a freezer instead of chasing a trophy.
