After getting Jacob and his deer out early I drop him off real quick and tell him what my plans are for the rest of the day. As everyone thought we would be in a area that we went into early. Now that he connected on his buck, and at the house getting some TV time I head to where I'm gonna hunt for the noon and evening hunt

I get out of the pickup. get the MR CC on grab the rifle and head up the mountain. Two hundred yards I bust three does from their beds. They are blowing and not really wanting to leave. Dang that's the way I want to go. So After looking for any prospects I decide to turn right and side hill at a angle then switch back up a steep point to go above and beyond them.
As I'm climbing I realize that, I'm getting warmer, I can't take anything off. I was dressed light with temps above normal and the humidity up greatly. So I stop and take a breather get a drink and then head to the top. Not that far but steep. All together from the truck maybe a mile.

Dang nothing but five or six ATVs with around ten orange hunters That I wasn't expecting. That's why I chose to go there to try to get above and beyond them. So lets see I think we have to start plan D As A had been successful early and now everything is going backwards.

I turn to the south to avoid them as it sounds more like a bar room than hunting. UGH
I drop off the backside and get down in a hollow with two finger points with fairly flat terrain but a mile or so away from the other crowd onto some property that joins my neighbors. I get in the middle of these two points take off the MR sit down eat a sandwich, granola, apple. and settle in for a long evening watching two old overgrown fields along with the hardwood timber at my back.

I look its 230 perfect three hours to go and just sit back watch and remember the days events so far. I look to the west, up above the field. What the hell. grab the binos Big black spot. Well maybe I need to change quarry, Look it over good What the heck I have a stamp he's nice I range it 346 No not taking that shot in mild brush and front angle.
quarter toward me. He turns walks out of sight. I thought oh well. So back to deer mode.

I look at time it's now 320. grab a sip of water and see two does come down a point headed to the north pole. I keep watching here comes blackie behind them at a slow walk. gettin closer. I change modes again as by now he's gotta come down this way. come on come on. checking wind he still waddles waddles down and across the creek to the old field to my right. wind in my favor. I range parts of the field where I think hes headed. 130 yards perfect. I wait as he went out of sight. dang where did he go.. I stand up to get a better view. No bear. ugh I then look in front of me. There he is not 60 yards from me angling my way. Wow the stars are lining up. I've taken plenty of bear with hounds. but never this way. My Howa .300 is up and at he ready. turn just a bit I thought. It must have been out loud because at that instant he stopped looked my way, turned his head to leave. Perfect. BOOOOM he rolled grabbed a sapling with his teeth as he was going down. One short death moan and no more quiver..

I check him call Jacob to get some help to me, and by 4.15 he's there with me to grab a few pic and get it out. With a short drag and muscle binding pulls we got it to where a neighbor could get his farm tractor up to it. Made the rest easier. We got home last evening late and ate some venison strap. I put Jacobs deer up and relaxed some.
Today is a wash out Lots of heavy rain and tstorms. Going to hit the rest of the week hard to try to connect on ole mossy horn. Then onto some does for the freezer.

Took him to the meat shop and check station. 287lb I would guess about a 5 1/2 square and 17" melon

Thanks John.. Today is a off day heavy rain and tstorms Going to take my 80 yr old father in law along with stepson the next couple days and fill up with some does. Then back to looking for a nice buck.

Great story. Can't ask for a better bonus animal than that. Great looking coat on that bear. Congrats, David.

Very nice David. I hunted the forest around Green Bank and didn't see a thing. Buddy saw a decent bear. Hunted hard for 3 days and only saw does in the fields of the private farms.
