My boy Garrett turned 8 two weeks ago. Next week he is taking his hunter safety test. The headaches I went through to get him in was unreal. Wisconsin the hunting age is 12, and I was told over and over by these morons who teach hunter safety (you think they would know the rules!) that he has to be 11-1/2 years old to take it. I remind them of the Pitman Robertson act, and tell them to look up the actual laws that state you cannot discriminate by age. Then go through the whole spiel explaining why I want him to get his card. I want to start applying him for out of state youth hunts where there is a lower hunting age.
Then they are pissed because I am doing the on-line course (they say was designed for adults) instead of the week long gig, but they cover all the same stuff just I teach him the material at our schedule instead of them teaching him. The on-line course has study material on-line with tests and a one day field day and test. I ask these guys "so you think you can teach my kid better than me? what special training do you have?" they shut up fast. I happen to know 2 instructors personally, and no offense but these guys are the type who shot a couple dink bucks in their lives and like to thump their chests in front of little kids about it.
The same kind of guys that if you showed them a hot fishing spot they would take someone else the next day just to play the guide that knows it all, and wonder why you were pissed at them then. Trust me, i had it happen with both of them.
anyway, next weekend is the big day. I hope these guys don't have a vengeance for him (not being tested by the guys I know) just because he will be the youngest kid probably to ever take the test in our state, Wish the little dude luck

The kid might want to apply himself. :D

Good luck to Garrett!

Hope he got more than his looks from his mom! Good luck to Garret! I'll echo Oak's comment... ;)

Only Schmaltz would turn his kid's Hunter Ed process into a confrontation and a pissing match.

he will do fine, probably knows more than some of the instucters already.

Good Luck to him. Sounds like the idiots are on a power trip. I remember when I took my bow course they asked: "What is the first thing you have to do when you get to a downed deer?" I said make sure its dead. They said no fill out your tag. I told them go ahead YOU fill out the tag while it jumps up and runs off.

Good Luck Garrett!! You will do great! My son just went thru hunters ed and was very frustrated also with the process too!!! Hang in there!!

They told me that same thing with my son last year, and he was 10. We don't have an option of an online course - it is 10 hours minimum of classroom instruction and a written test. The instructors, who know me and my son, kept telling me that it is a fairly difficult test for a kid. Michael took great notes, studied and got a score of 97% - better than all but one adult. Our instructors were great, though, and let me assist him by explaining words he did not understand fully. For example, he was allowed to ask e what inebriated means, as in "It is illegal to hunt while inebriated." Stupid question anyway.

He went on his first pheasant hunt with one of the instructors and a few other friends. They were all impressed with both his shooting skills and his attention to safety.

Good luck to your son! Nothing better than spending time in the field with your kids.

It's really amazing how so many people equate age to responsibility and ability. My daughter, now 14 has been hunting with me for four years now....she is safer with a gun and in the field than a lot of 'grown ups' I've hunted with...yeah, sad but true. It's all about the 'culture' they are brought up in...not age.
Lil Schmalts...good luck, I know you'll do great!

He will only have trouble on the test if they do not read him questions and switch words he does not understand. Example, one practice question was this "regarding trigger control when shooting..."
He asked me what does regarding mean? I read it again and replace regarding with "when talking about" As far as the trouble i had getting him in the on-line course, they have the attitude that no father can teach his son as good as they can. Hmm.... i bet they never met any home schooled kids either that could function in the world and pass a entrance exam for higher education. Truth is, i probably spent more time with him studying for this on-line course and one day field day/testing that he would have got from the longer 5-10 day classes. He is ready, Sunday will be a big day for him, i just hope he won't be a nervous as me and cause him to not think clear.

So why do you think this kid is holding the .22 that was my first gun when I was 8 years old??:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

He did super, in fact he only got 1 question wrong on the written test out of 40, and blew away the instructors on the hands on 1 on 1 test.
