Had my last big game hunt of the season and after a bad start it ended up a good one. It’s about a three hour drive to camp from my house and after I got to camp Friday night I realized I had forgotten my sleeping bag. Well after a long drive and a short night it was time to head up the mountain. After an hour long hike in the dark I was in possession and ready to sling lead, well actually copper (triple shocks). Immediately after shooting light a spotted a very large group of elk and moved to intercept them. They took over two hours to come across a large flat and start up the mountain. I had a lot of time to watch them and counted them as they funneled through a gate. I stopped counting at 200 which I guess was about half the herd. I was a little worried about the less than ideal wind with that many noses but it worked. They came up the draw I was waiting in and the shot was 233 yards. She spun and ran down the steep hill and piled up after about 70yds. She was quartering slightly to me and the bullet entered behind the left shoulder and exited just in front of the right hind quarter. The weird thing was that she bleed out underneath her skin. I mean after skinning she was covered on both sides from the neck to the hinds with blood. It was only on the surface membranes and she cleaned up very well with no wasted meat. Someday I hope to shoot a nice bull like a lot of you guys have, but meats meat and I’ll take it.

Congrats!! I hope I can add one like that, or even one younger, to the freezer yet this year!

And the best kind of winter meat too.
Hunting elk in big herds like that is really something, getting to be so close to that many animals.
Sounds like a great way to spend a day in December.

Isn't your freezer full of elk, Oak?

Nope, only filled one of three tags, and gave part of that one away. I should be as motivated about elk as I am about deer and antelope, but it's difficult for me. :D
