There was a similar bill in CO, it’s not really making animal husbandry a sex crime as certain practices for instance artificial insemination. These bills really are just going after beef producers and are trying to make it uneconomic… I think the other measure in the CO bill was that beefs can’t be slaughtered till they are 5 years old.

I agree with @Hydrophilic it won’t be illegal but if Burger King et al figure out how to get fake meat cheaper than beef they will absolutely switch.

India hasn’t outlawed meat and ~40% of the country is vegetarian… the US is like ~3-5% depending on the poll and definition you use.

Doubt it will ever be illegal, but the way meat is produced will surely change in the future.
The technology to grow real meat in a lab (cultured meat) already exists, it’s now just a matter of scaling it in a way that it’s a cheaper alternative. Once that happens, and for better or for worse, it will be hugely disruptive to the meat producing industry as we know it.

The best bet going (as far as I've found) for CO2 removal from the atmosphere is regenerative agriculture. It relies heavily on rotational mob grazing. Pretty sure meat isn't going anywhere.

AI is used more in the dairy industry and pork but it gets used in the beef production to. The big kicker in that Colorado bill was the 5 years to slaughter. A steer (a boy without testicles) is usually 14-18 months old when it is slaughtered. A 5 year old steer would be tougher than your boot leather. Plus the farmer/rancher would have 5x the input cost on that steer and it would be way over slaughter weight maybe as much as 2x.

The bill in California that goes into effect on January 1 makes it so sow pigs have to be in crates of certain size, I think 24sq feet. Most pig Barns have pens 18-20 sq feet. The cost to retrofit a 1,000 sow facility to meet California standards is estimated at $1,000 per hog. The biggest reason sows only have 18-20 sq. Feet is because in a 24sq ft pen a sow can move around. She gets up and lays back down smashing her piglets. The piglets die a cruel death of asphyxiation and the farmer is out all of the money for them.

It would be interesting to have a “stars in the sky” style documentary about the agg industry where farms/ranchers just explain stuff, why certain things are done and not others. Give vegan/animal rights folks an actual opportunity to express their concerns and then discuss the issue.

I absolutely agree with that sentiment, but as each day/month/year passes, I’m more and more convinced that it would be pointless. It seems more and more that either side of ANY issue can’t sit down and communicate and listen anymore. Stubbornness is the way of society any more

I threw my vote in for 20-50 years. Probably closer to the 50 end of the spectrum as these things take lots of time. I really do believe that it will be outlawed at some point and the beginning stages are to just legislate requirements and restrictions that begin to make it cost prohibitive. Will there be resistance? Sure. Will it be uncomfortable? Absolutely. But just like any extreme legislation that makes it’s way thru the hoops, it’s done chipping away slowly. It seems by chipping away piece meal style, whoever is pushing for whatever outcome, can pull it off and almost actually make the opposition believe it was their choice. Haha. All you have to do is slowly change the “norm”
