I was watching the local news this morning and a story came on about some college students studying the local wild horses to see if they could be used to help prevent wildfires. They felt that wild horses could be planted in wilderness areas to eat fuels. I reacted with "they must be crazy, in this day and age, nobody would seriously consider putting an invasive species into wilderness areas for any reason." Or would they?

Doesn’t California have a bunch of wildfires?
The area where the students are studying the horses locally had a devastating fire go through there about 10 years ago. The horses have been there for well over a century. By listening to the people doing the study, I got the impression that the recommendations that will come out of the study were written long before the study began.

As well, this particular group of feral horses runs between timber company land and a national monument. Except for when they're running around designated wilderness after some a-hole cuts another hole in the boundary fence.
