Great weather for the youth hunt this year. In the AM I called a nice tom in to 10 feet:eek: but he made a half circle around Garrett who was about 30 yards from me. He has not mastered the thought of the roll and shoot gig when the birds come in on the wrong side so he let it walk out of sight. The big old Tom hopped up on a log and looked at me a little bit before wandering back the way he came. That afternoon after a round of mountain biking we grilled out some elk burgers and headed up a steep "mound" as they call them here in Wi where the glacier leave a little mountain. We got almost to the top and a bird let loose below us. We ducked behind a large boulder and I called the lovesick bird right up to us. I think me must have ran some because he covered the distance so fast. Garrett shot and the bird started flopping and tumbled down the mound for 75 yards before he caught it. Fun day for sure.

Fantastic hunt, and results!! Love to see so many states having youth seasons.

Sounds like a great day, and one that neither one of you will forget! It may be a good thing that Garrett didn't attempt to roll and shoot. May not had a second chance. Congratulations Garrett on a nice bird.

You have great photos of the bird, good looking dogs, but what about the elk burgers!:D
