Sorry, I am headed out the door and haven't researched this thoroughly, but on face value it appears to be more BS.

The proposed rule change includes a price reduction for the outfitter-sponsored big game, elk and deer combination licenses and new target quotas for the big game and deer licenses as follows: Reduction in the price of the variable priced outfitter-sponsored big game combination license $1,250 with a quota increase to 5,390 licenses to be sold; · Reduction in the price of the variable priced outfitter-sponsored elk combination license to $995; and · a reduction in the price of the variable priced outfitter-sponsored deer combination license to $995, with a quota increase to 2,250 licenses to be sold. Comments are due Nov. 6. Send email to [email protected] , or via mail to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Licensing Division, PO Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701.

mtmiller...I dont know a lot about MT game laws and how their system works...but I think state game agencies are feeling the pinch of the recession (in reduction of revenues). After years of increasing prices and demand I think a number are starting to realize they may be pricing a high percentage of people out of the game. By supporting the outfitter side with ^ tags available and decreasing the price they feel they are supporting an income producing industry in MT...plus the industry probably has good lobby support?...Just a thought?

If people are willing to spend thousands on an outfitter, they can pony up a couple of hundred bucks more for the tag. If it was about revenue, then they would give the break to the average guy and get more of them out in the field. Maybe the outfitters should drop their prices if a couple of hundred bucks if it makes that big of difference.

Most outfitters have dropped their prices. People have cancelled hunts because they have lost their jobs, are fearful of losing their jobs or are making less money. If you like outfitted hunts, this is a great time for you. My buddy is always calling me about this or that deal he has found at half off.

I don't have the facts, but I would guess that high dollar non-res tag apps are down, too.

This is bullshit! Give the fuggn Outfitters MORE tags AND cut the price?!?!?!

There are eight categories of combination licenses available to nonresidents:
Category Price Quota/Target
General Public
Big Game Combination $643
Elk Combination $593 11,500
Deer Combination $343 2,300
(Includes a non-refundable $5 drawing fee and $10 Hunting Access
Enhancement Fee)

Outfitter Sponsor (Market Based) Orig New Orig New
Big Game Combination $1,500 $1,250 4,750 5,390
Elk Combination $1,400 $995
Deer Combination $1,100 $995 1,800 2,250

I could care less about the outfitters. What I care about is the resource. The State has OVERSOLD tags for outfitter sponsored tags every year since it started. This moron has the audacity to come on after 1 single year of not selling tags and try to take us all for fools. I think this idiot and all that follow should be fired. The resource is taking a beating, the Dept. is increasing tags were ever possible to make up for mismanagement on there part. Stupid. If they want more revenue then they should put out a better product, and more of it. This already has many of us really pissed off. The phones are ringing. I need the stats of outfitter sponsored tags sales for the last 5 years. If anyone know where to look send me a pm.

Could you care less that they're planning on increasing welfare tags by 13%? Add a few more ranches to the do not hunt list...

Part that really chaps my hide is that there are as many outfitter deer tags as there are for DIY folks...

Yeah, the guaranteed or high allocation of outfitter tags chaps real good. I don't agree with that. That is guaranteed income for the guys that can fill their client slots and puts us DIYers at a disadvantage. Quite frustrating.

NHY and Tom,

Did either of you attend or comment on the negotiations between the outfitters and the outfitters sponsored tags?

If you did, you'd realize what the issue is here.

Has nothing to do with resident VS non-resident license pricing.

But, feel free to continue to chirp.

Is this bad? Won't this help the landowners in the long run? Maybe I am wrong, if I am please enlighten me.

Big shooter

How do you have time to post? Isn't chasing bastard hunters off your place 24-7 taking up all your time?:D

Hey Dickshooter.......now that you mention it.......I was going to start a whole new thread, but I will just go from here. Please keep in mind during this post that I am not accusing anyone on this site for doing this as I have nothing but respect for all of you (well almost all of you, sorry Greenhorn) but since hunting season started we have lost one cow and one big heifer calf, both shot by hunters. One was shot from the pavement and one was shot within the fences of our place. This is why we sometimes have a bit of a bitter taste in our mouth when it comes to hunters. Again, I am not lumping any of you in this category but this is why landowners either lease to outfitters or don't allow hunting at all.

Anyway.....I shot an antelope the other day that I might put on here to see if he is big or not...even a blind squirrel finds an acorn even now and again.

Shooter, are cattle that are "poached" covered under any insurance policy? That definitely sucks to lose livestock to idiots. I generally don't agree with you but nothing can condone stupidity like that.

I wonder how many MT residents would purchase a 2nd deer or elk tag at a non-resident price? Idaho allows it...why not MT? Obviously, only the real serious guys would fork over the cash, but I bet quite a few would. 6 week archery season + 5 week rifle season...lots of time to fill an extra tag. I'd go for it.

That stinks big time. But totally shutting off land or leasing is not the only solution to the problem. Did you give those guys permission to hunt? If so, then next time (if there is one) take down every name and lic plate that goes on your land and tell them they will be in trouble if anything happens. If you didn't give those guys permission, then short of dobermans and razor wire, you can't do much other than keep an eye out during hunting season. I think most landowners lease to outfitters because of the $$$, not the hassle. I've talked to a few ranchers who didn't have much good to say about their outfitters either.
