What's your risk level?

Funny thing I'm finding out about transporters... There really isnt as many around as one would think. I picked out a couple drainages for sheep and had a he'll of a time finding some one to fly me in, and it wasn't because they were booked up either, it was either too far or they weren't familiar with the area. That was in the AK range no less... There are still areas of the state that dont see many people or planes.

The research is done as much as it can be. It just a leap of faith now, a true OYOA.

Bambi,

Is it 3k total for the trip? Or is it 3k each? (for you and a buddy)

Lets say its enough money that the cost makes you think about it twice. For some people that might be $500, for others it might be $5000. Maybe its a months salary...

I'd love to have a plane, but the cost of buying/opperating one just doesn't pencil out for me.

I was most intersested in how big of risk takers we have here.

There was a thread a while ago about how people found thier hunting spots, and it was obvious that pretty much everyone got a tip from someone else, or it was handed down to them from a family member. Very few people actaully picked a spot on a map and went in blind with out talking to someone who put boots on the ground. In my case, people who actually put boots on the ground are impossible to locate and information is very limited. I've spent over a month reserching, every possible angle I can think of.

Draftstud, good point I hadn't thought of that, but I would be highly suspect that any mining or minal exploration has gone on in this area in the last few decades.

I was talking to my friend about another area about 30-40 miles away and he didn't think it would be as good as the area he mentioned trying, but really wasn't sure... He'd flown the area and seen a few animals, but only flew around it that one time. The area I originally wanted to try might have been worse, but its hard to say. Hell both areas might suck, or they might produce a whopper. I won't know until I go.

If anything I'll get to spend 10-12 days in the "wilderness" doing what I love. I like to stack the odds in my favor of killing an animal, but the reality is.. its a hunt, I've eaten a lot of tags.

So you mentioned that your friend was in there earlier and didn't see anything? or did I misunderstand that statement? Man you've got to think there's some sort of animals in a remote area like that. I'm married with 4 little yippers so dropping 3 grand would be a little tough but if you don't have those kind of obligations I would surely be saving for it. Like you said it could pay off big time.

Bow, I actually wasnt pointing my remarks at anybody in particular. I'm just sick of hearing the attitude were folks are supposed to get a critter every time they go out, otherwise they wont take the risk.

Animals move. On our sheep hunt this past fall. days would go by and we didnt see anything white. We spiked out to a high valley and seen onesy's and twos's, banana heads, lambs and ewes. We glassed a large portion of that drainage and the biggest we seen was roughly a 1/2 curl and it was spotty.

When we were flying out, the high valley we spent a couple days in had roughly 20+ sheep in it. critters move and you cant base 1 or 2 times being in it to judge the area.

Money is tough for most folks nowadays and everybody has to make that call, but I try to get out (and pay as little as possible) and enjoy a new area. Its always an adventure, even if it cost more than I want it to.

Picked a spot on the map last year that looked sheepy but didnt drop any money outside of gas for the truck and boot leather to get there. Spent 2500 apiece the year before on a whim and took sheep on both trips. If I saw something on a map that perked my interest I would do it in a heartbeat. Thanks to Topo I have a growing list of places to explore that would take several lifetimes to complete. You'll never know what you might be missing if you dont and you can always make more money. Good luck.
