Just wondering which scenario drives everyone's decisions. When do you all want to be in the woods? Early and before the season starts and the elk get pressured or during the heat of the rut when they are screaming everywhere?

I'll be the first to chime in, but think I will echo a bunch of folks in that given the chance I would be in the woods everyday. I can't ever remember coming home from a hunting/camping/etc trip where I didn't wish I could've stay longer. Since I am a rifle hunter that has only hunted elk in CO so far I haven't been able to be actually hunting during the rut but will give that a shot sometime one way or another. After this year I think we will be shifting our camp from 2nd season to 3rd, trying to work the weather trends and move closer to the deer rut as well.

Even season has it's own charm... archery season is a great time to be in the woods and camping is easy, that said there is something I really like about hunting on a cold crisp day in the snow.

Never hunted in the snow but last year during the last week of archery elk hunting in the mountains was spectacular. We didn't kill a thing but wouldn't change a minute of it either. Hearing that first elk bugle was magical.

Good question! I am not a bow hunter, so I can't speak to those types of experiences. However, there is something magical about the rut - screaming bulls, crisp mornings, fall colors, etc.

I have only hunted out west 1 time. We got out there before the season started. We saw elk, but none that were talking. I am looking forward to going out later this year. I want to experience both and go from there. I hope there is some snow too.

One trip outside to see whats where with a cuppa...bingo,it's time. Oh & year round.

Just being is the woods.... the snow, the rut.... I don't care. I just love being in the woods. That is what made me make the move from Southern Minnesota to the Western Slope of Colorado years ago.
