What is your ideal, long range target rifle build?

I know some of you guys have put a lot of thought and research into this.

If the cost wasn’t a consideration at all, what would be your ultimate 1,000 yard target rifle? The rifle build, chambering, cartridge, bullet, etc.

Basically, your ideal rifle build for punching paper with ultimate accuracy at long distances.

1000 yd paper punching is a pretty mature competition space (1000 yd benchrest) and the latest nationals equipment list I saw shows 6 BRA as the most popular option with 6 Dasher a close second. Berger and Vapor Trail bullets are both well represented.

PRS competition I'm much more personally familiar with (but fits what you asked less closely), give me my 6 Dasher and Berger 109's. Nationally the Berger 105 might be slightly more popular, but I think the 109's have a razors width of advantage in the west.

Custom action. Kelby or something of the like.
32" barrel 1.25" full length plus muzzle brake.
Probably a laminated stock 3" forestock, flat bottom.
7mm Rem Mag shooting either the 195gr Berger EOL or the 197gr Sierra MatchKing.
Scope I already have. Sightron SIII 10-50X60 LRTD with 1/8" clicks.

Weight estimate in the 17lb range.

25-284, 1:7tw, heavy varmint profile barrel, Mausingfield action, Manners MCS-PRS1, Timney HIT, Wyatt’s M5.

Would use it to shoot the 138 A-Tips

@p_ham what would that run?

7PRCW
Lone Peak Fuzion or Impact 737R

Foundation Genesis II
Bartlein HV 1:8
180 Berger Hybrids
Nightforce or Sightron for the glass.

I meant cost but hey that’s pretty good 😂

The 6br family is so much easier, and fun than the long action cartridges.

If I ever decide to make the time in June to shoot the Nightforce ELR, I would need to build something and I think it'd come down to the 7 PRCW or 7 PRC. 180 Berger's seem the most likely to please by reputation, but I'd be open to seeing how the 184 Berger, 180 and 190 Hornady, or 183 Sierra did as well.

I consider it every year, but I don't need a project and June is never not busy.

6 BRA, 6 Dasher, or 25x47 lapua krieger, benchmark, or other premium cut barrel
Lone peak fuzion action
28” competition or heavier contour
Foundation Sampson stock/chassis
Tangent theta 7-35x56 with JTAC reticle
TBAC Magnus K RR suppressor
Bix n Andy tac sport pro x trigger

Make it a 7 SAUM if a lot of shooting over 1000 is expected.

Edit to add, everything in my list is stuff I don’t have minus the lone peak action so I’m not positive I’d love it but I think I would.. 6mm would be Berger 109 or 110 ATip, 25 cal would be Sierra 131, 135 Berger, or 138 ATip. 7mm would try 190 ATip first, 190 Berger lrht 2nd.

I’m pretty easy to please as long range target shooting is steel and not paper. Not looking for a true bench gun but a gun I will pack and shoot in the field.

For action a trued 700 or clone is fine. Quality trigger that breaks clean at 1.5lbs. Cut rifled barrel. McMillan A5. Final weight minus scope and rings around 12lbs.

I prefer as few of cooks in the kitchen as possible for better quality control and responsibility of work. If the barrel maker also chambers and installs on trued action and also beds stock, that’s a plus.

My last 3 have been just that with Mark Chanlynn. He has been building long range rifles a long time.

A paper puncher would be a 30+lb bench gun.

Thanks for all the ideas so far. The 338 Lapua was on the list for extra long stuff, but I’ve been leaning more towards something 6mm or 7mm. Hadn’t looked into the 6BRA, 6BR, or 6 Dasher so I’ll do some more research there. 7PRC would be cool also. Just looking for ideas. Keep them coming if you’ve got them.

Would you expound on your pick for trigger? Currently weighing options between BnA, KRG and Timney.
For strictly target shooting the BnA can be reliably adjusted down to a few ounces and you can fine tune the sear height. You do have to keep them clean and dry though.

I don't have any experience with the KRG triggers. The Timneys tend to have just a touch of creep before they break, which I'm not a huge fan of for a target trigger.

That being said, if being used for any type of field comp, I'd go with a Triggertech Diamond.
