Waterfowl, let’s see them!

The last two days my 12 year old son and I have had some fun.
My truck said 6 degrees on the way to hunt today. We found a small body of water the ducks have been keeping open while everything else besides the river is frozen. Drake killed his first pintail today. Exciting for both of us. Pups first year of duck hunting and she's doing great. Busting through ice and all. Have spent most of my hunts with my favorite hunting buddy, my son.

It's been mostly tough hunting here since November with just a few good days sprinkled in. When it gets tough I can usually make something happen at the big lake with my duckboat, but even that wasn't working lately. Finally fixed that yesterday, way overdue! Got the 2 mallards on jumpshots and the pintail and widgeon just flew over me in last 30 minutes of shooting light.

Spent 5+ hours in the duckboat, probably paddled 4 to 5 miles, but it paid off. One duck shy of limit but I called it quits about 3 PM, really tired and wind was 20+ by then. Should have had another snow goose, but no big deal. Missed a few long shots on mallards, and passed up some teal and widgeon early hoping for the mallard limit. Really prefer decoying ducks, but that's just not working right now.

Nicely done! Always good to be adaptable and be willing to change to what will work vs what we want to work. Some good looking birds there.

I spotted an unusual visitor today on a local creek. I hustled back to my truck to get my phone to take a picture through the binos and thankfully he stuck around. The local waterfowl biologist says it may be the first confirmed sighting of a Harlequin in my county.
