Understanding Wyoming drawing odds information

Wrong.

Nonresident regular draw is about 8-9 year right now assuming pp's.

Steelhead may have been exaggerating a bit, but there were 1,000+ people with less that 8 points that didn't draw. It will take a while...

Point creep is an ugly thing...

True. 8-9 will probably keep growing pending the amount of interest the unit keeps getting.
I do wonder what will happen when people eventually cash in the 8-12 points for a unit. Will they again start buying points or just hunt general units- lower point units more?
I get the feeling a lot of guys are buying points in wyoming, holding out for a unit they figure will cough up a monster bull and once theyve done that hunt theyll focus on places with better draw odds. But I have been wrong before...

Hey guys. I am new to this whole preference point thing and am doing a pronghorn hunt in Wyoming next fall. I realize that this may be a stupid question but I'm continuing on anyway. I know that I won't lose my preference point if I don't draw my first choice unit, but is my one preference point taken into consideration on my second and third choice as well? Or is my application basically zero preference points for my second and third choices? Just trying to judge my drawing odds and avoid losing my point but guaranteeing a unit that I could probably use one point to draw. I also realize that this is in the elk thread... but it seemed to be a relating question. Thanks ahead of time for the information.

Points are not considered for 2nd/3rd choice.

To add on to what Fin said, no they're not considered for 2nd and 3rd choice, but, realize 2nd and 3rd choices in states like Wyoming and Colorado are only drawing if the unit goes leftover. 2nd and 3rd choices require much more extensive research if you intend to actually draw. What is it, Arizona? or New Mexico? that is different and actually treats each choice as a standalone e.g., they check your first and you can't get it, then they see your second and treat it as a first and if you don't get it they keep moving down the list.

Edit: Maybe wyoming gives you a crack at the random draw with a second choice, for some reason I doubt it though. And Colorado doesn't have a random draw so it only would work as I described it.

Wyoming leftovers are after 2nd and 3rd choices. 2nd choice hunts with decent odds can be seen in a matter of seconds when looking at the random demand reports.

It does look like very few Wyoming elk units don't draw out in the first drawing.
Those that don't, and go into the second almost always never make it to leftover. Lots of guys that put in for an almost impossible to draw unit as their first choice, so that they can then put a supposedly easy to draw unit as 2nd choice to draw and still keep points, won't be very successful in the future in drawing a tag that way. But I guess it's still possible.
Lots of points being sold to guys for elk in Wyoming.
