Ultimate Marriage Test

I notice home improvement projects are near the top of the list of marriage tests. HGTV is the root of this evil. That channel has got to be a conspiracy between divorce attorneys and marriage counselors.
It’s been a year since my wife and I finished up our third home build together in twenty years. We have done the majority of work on all three by ourselves.

Suffice to say we have learned a lot about ourselves and each other along the way.

I am pretty sure if we ever move again we will be buying instead of building.

I think almost everyone underestimates how much stress is involved in planning, materials procurement and bringing a build to completion.

Men, there is no color in the world that means more to you than it does to your wife. 😄

I wouldn’t have wanted to go through the process with any other woman, but I don’t think we want to go through the home building process again anytime soon…
Having said that, we still have a shop/garage to build next summer. I plan to give her ideas more consideration this time around.🫣😄

If you enjoy stress, buy a home built a hundred years ago and "upgrade" it. Sometimes I wonder if those old guys ever saw a carpenter's square!!

I did just that professionally for eight months. There were four additions cobbled together over about 50 years.

Frosty the snowman would venture into the hot place without sunscreen before I would attempt that with my family…

its been 13 years, 3 children, and many moves from Michigan to North Carolina, North Carolina to Michigan, Michigan to Montana. Built one house together ourselves. Have been completely broke living paycheck to paycheck, to financially secure together.

Biggest pain point is the ongoing argument to get a vasectomy. :cautious:

My wife is on me about that too….. I don’t have much to work with already in that department so I’m afraid of anything going wrong.

We were going to build a shed this summer. But after building our house 2 years ago and still working on landscaping and minor things I'm not ready mentally for that shed business.

Anytime an attractive female coworker gets mentioned.

Me: Hey, Chelsi at work got promoted to manager.
W: Which Chelsi? The cute one with the red hair?
Me: Um, yeah the one with red hair.
W: What, did she call you first, gushing with the news!?
Me: Ah, no…but,
W: What’s the point in you telling me this, anyways!?
Me: Er, to tell you she will be moving to a different department.
W: Right. I’m sure that’s what you were thinking all along!

I managed to arrange to camping trip with my HS unicorn just after graduation, and made the mistake of setting us up in a tandem. Every paddle stork she ended it with a little "flick" that placed a perfect stream of seawater right across my face.

Also thinking it would be a great idea to split the responsibility, I gave her the map and compass. So after about 15 minutes she basically stopped paddling all together and would just point left, so I'd angle that way, then she'd point right, so I'd angle that way, then back left... and so on for 6-ish hrs. And each time she issued to revised direction she'd act like I was a total idiot, at first with sarcasm... then not.

We survived the trip but it turns out I don't like unicorns anymore
I was accused of being a unicorn with a one track mind in High School....
