TX whitetail rut hunt/now late season.

We have our Christmas lights up at deer camp! Wife and I are out for two nights and a wake up.

Didn’t have time to hunt today getting here late, collecting firewood, cooking dinner, etc. Had a nice fire.
On the way here we saw herds of axis, blackbuck and sanbar, hogs, whitetail and one rainbow haired trans.
Settled in for the night watching Lonesome Dove.

Skimmed over the game cams but not being too picky tomorrow.

Best of luck the next few days! You’ve got some nice ones on the game cameras. Hope you’re successful to close the season!

I’m in North Texas and it seemed like the rut dates were a little different than usual here too.

A little action tonight but all small bucks with not enough meat on them. One decent one came out right at dark. Gonna try again for a bit in the morning then rush home before the “arctic blast” hits TX.

Well I was too picky this season. Passed on several doe and small bucks again this morning. Still have a week left but promised the wife I’d stay home and we would camp in the back yard a couple of nights.
We do have a doe/spike season in January I’ll try to hit. I normally kill 2-4 deer a year because we rely on venison. Strange year.

I'm right there with you 2-4 a year haven't killed one yet this year. Been chasing one deer all year and just haven't been able to connect and not willing to compromise, filling the freezer with a WY elk in early October definitely strengthened my resolve. With just under a month less there's a real possibility this will be the first time in 18 years I haven't killed a deer during our season.

Most of the deer I saw this year just didn’t seem to have enough meat on them for me to mess with. I passed a couple of decent does this morning thinking a buck would come out. The drought was rough on the deer this year.

Last night we heard coyotes on the carcass of my wife’s deer. She was nervous but agreed to follow me to try and kill one or two, it was a dark and moonless night. Once we got to where I knew the carcass was we hit our lights and it was gone. We followed the drag trail of blood, hide and guts a 100yds or so into the brush before it all scattered.
Once we got back to camp that hillside erupted with about 10-15 coyote howls. Freaked my wife out. 😂

Just that one buck seen today. I didn’t realize it was a full moon, that really shuts them down here, may get a crack at one first thing in the morning then the sightings are usually few and far between. I may go out late tonight and look for a hog.
No big fire tonight, just enough to cook. Gonna try to nap a bit before I decide to go out tonight or not.173A2117-6188-4967-B983-8ED2EADD3DF2.jpeg43FC3AA0-21AD-4635-8AD9-16FFAD809300.jpeg0DFEBB6C-6F68-4B8D-A7D5-C361D5698CCE.jpeg75CDF7F5-20A5-4AF6-A3CF-13062B177CA0.jpegA79CC0C2-5D19-49B5-9AC7-95AFC90C3EDE.jpeg

Good luck! The January heat has been tough, lows around 70 and highs over 90 for us over new year’s really slowed deer activity down. Hope they move for you in the morning.

Got up this morning to a good frost and the moon setting behind the horizon. Got in my little pop up a little after 0600 and waited. Two little bucks at first light cruising their way to a bedding area, then nothing until about 0830 when I decided if I wasn’t going to fill a tag this season I might as well get out and do what I truly love to do; sneak through the woods.

From roughly the middle of the property where I was, I walked back to camp and dropped my pack and bino harness; I wanted to be sleek and quiet. I put the sun at my back and headed west, the prevailing wind was south and the frost was melting making the ground soft and wet; perfect stalking conditions. I went up a hill into a flat that I always see deer sign and sure enough there was sign.

Snuck around and into a flock of about twenty turkeys but they aren’t in season. I still consider it a good day when I can sneak up on that many turkey. 9DB75AB4-790B-47C3-9F20-7D2E6E7BEBF9.jpeg

Kept pushing northwest and bumped a deer behind this brush pile/wall of cedar. 19E61530-A22E-4E5F-932A-4459E4BBCD82.jpeg
Then I headed south to the fence line. I knew that when I headed back east the sun would be in my face but didn’t have much choice. Sure enough I bumped two doe before they jumped the fence onto our property. A7DD087D-D9DE-4F06-B004-575A153A4E2D.jpeg

Got to the road I wanted to head back north on. Snuck past a group of young angus steers and into a group of 3-4 doe not more than fifty yards in front of me. I drop to my knees and settled in for a shot. One turned just right and I pulled the trigger, good hit and she made a squeaking sound and ran. The other deer stood there looking back my way but I was in the shadows and down low so they weren’t sure what just happened.
I loaded another round and took aim at the next closest doe. Then all hell broke loose, those damn steer came running up behind me and scared the deer off. Still got a nice fat doe, she had more fat than any deer I ever remember. 23536AE2-2978-4CFC-8EA1-1B4E05BFE644.jpeg
