Sighting in a Traditions muzzeloader that was my grandfather's he left me when he past away. Shooting a 300gr bullet, messing around today with different powder amounts. I think I found where it gets a little hot. 200gr of pyradex the gun isn't happy.

I just checked mine isnt stamped probably should've checked. 150 is it's happy place. Was using the 50gr pellets.
Most older muzzleloaders are max at 100 grains. 150 was considered a magnum and would have been marked. You are bordering on a face replacement surgery messing around like this. Back it down before you get that Darwin Award.

I never needed more than 100 for deer. Kicks less and you get more loads out of a package of pellets.
When i use the side hammer 95 seems to be what makes it happy. That is loose powder and patch and ball. 100 with that 300gr bullet was shooting super inconsistent for me. I wish it would've worked better. I have some 250gr bullets i am going to try and see if they like the 100gr powder.

Less powder.

Also, what twist is the barrel? It might be too slow to stabilize a 300gr projectile.
