Truck got a bath

I am sure that the amount of embarrassment he felt taught him a lesson that no amount of lecturing would improve upon.

You are fortunate that there was not a fuel or Oil released. It get's expensive real quick when that happens.

Only if the EPA thugs are around!

This incident happens more frequently than most believe. I was at a lake in NM one time and saw the same thing, but it was real funny actually. I did not see the actual event, but saw the aftermath.

This clown shows up with a brand new Chebby truck and a jet ski in tow. He attempted to launch the ski and was going to show off his new 4-wheel capabilities by pulling the lever into 4x4 (This was back when there was still a lever to pull). I realize that a Chebby needs 4x4 to pull a jet ski trailer out of the water, but he only pulled the lever far enough to put it into neutral. All the fool had to do was to step on the brake, but instead, he just bailed out of the truck. The trailer and truck went into 40 feet of water. The truck was right off the show room when he took it to the lake.

We saw it sitting there the next day after salvage with moss and mildew all over the inside. Nobody even bothered to roll the windows down. I hope that idiot got insurance before he left home!

First of all, glad no one was hurt. Second, I'm glad you can now laugh about it - nothing else you can do. My sons are now 21, 25 and 28, when they get talking about "the good old days" my wife and I hear some things we were aware of and others that are certainly a surprise ............... now we laugh, had we known back in the their "good old days" there would have been some extensive TLC. By the way, in our family TLC doesn't mean "tender loving care," my dad was a cattleman and wore Tony Lama cowboy boots, I remember many occasions where he grabbed you by one shoulder/arm and 'walked' you around in circles with his Tony Lama Care.

fixing the boat.....1500.00
cleaning the truck......3500.00
a day on the lake with 4 girls......priceless!
Actually, really glad no one got hurt. We all have been in similar situations growing up...

Truck is a 1999, that I have had for a long time and has over 300,000 miles. Still runs great. When I got a new truck, I figured this one was worth more to me than trade in value etc. Now it get used for hunting, going to the dump, etc. Due to being paid off years ago, it just has liability insurance.

Talked to several people and sounds like the best plan is to
1 - charge up battery and then crank it over for a few minutes with spark plugs out to push water out of cylinders
2 - drain and refill all fluids ( oil, tranny, differentials )
3 - Try to start it and see what ya got

Luckily we have had good weather here, so it has been drying for a week with 3 doors open and hood up. Pulled plugs last night and charged up battery, hopefully it will crank over tonight...and the process has started.

As mentioned, glad no one was hurt as well. Wow! The things we did as young bucks that come back to haunt us as parents...
Grandparents around - after understanding all were safe they sat back secretly snickering. :D What comes around, goes around...

Agree with spook. Dad of the year. Hunting season has its own catagory though. ;)

Empty the cylinders and spray wd40 in the cylinder s asap or you may have issues with rings.

The electronics are what typically total out a newer, submerged vehicle.

I would pull all of the connecters on the truck and spray a water displacing electrical cleaner in them.

Good luck.

oh and bleed the brakes, brake fluid naturally attracts water which will migrate down to the brake caliper and boil leaving you with only your ebrake at the worst possible time

that might work ,,,better chances if moter was off before the drink ,but it might be ok if it stalled upon first gulp of water,,,good luck.

Sorry to see that. Glad no one was hurt. Have to admit the first thing that came into my mind when I saw it was "Like a rock"

I imagine the computer is going to be the issue, but you should probably be able to pick up the parts you need from a wrecking yard fairly easy.

Good luck to you

Would have loved to heared him prepping himself for that conversation.

He called his mom of course......

Little update, pulled the plugs and hooked up the battery after work tonight. Cranked over like nothing ever happened and sprayed water and oil everywhere out of the plug holes.

Left the key on and checked everything out. Was amazed that everything seems to be working. Lights, stereo, wipers, power seats, electronic 4 wheel drive...I am a pretty happy guy :hump:

Pulled the plug on the oil...wow, that was interesting. I bet it drained 7-8 gallons of straight clean water before the oil started to flow out. Drained the tranny, which looked like it had never had a drop of water in it.

Got my hopes up......

This event is worthy of a Homer Simpson facepalm.

This is one of those "moments of growth" for everybody:D

Called his mom, that's hilarious. "Mom, don't be mad but.....":W:

Great father!

I admire that you know you have a good son, and reacted to that. Sorry about the truck; sounds like it may turn out OK,

ERSS- As someone who has worked with electronics all of my working life, get the electronics dry ASAP. Take covers off and have air blowing across circuit boards. Moisture trapped in housings will cause corrosion growth. Things might even work for a little while. But then you start getting intermittent problems.

Not trying to piss in your cornflakes, just trying to manage your expectations.

Now, kudos to the way you handled it with your son. I am sure nothing you could have said/done would have made him feel any worse than he already feels. Tip of the cap!

I had a freind who sank his 427 chevy jet boat 3 times,,,quick attention the minute it comes out of the water saved the motor 3 times,,,he gave up the lowrider jet boat thing after the 3rd time,,,clearing the fluids and changiing the oil a few times saved it,,,,electronics may be a problem,,good luck.
