We lost our irrigation water the last of August so we got rid of our pasture cows and scheduled a trip to the coast. Booked 3 days of fishing out of Newport. Salmon, deep water rockfish & lings and halibut. The non-selective salmon season had just opened and any salmon was legal, deep water bottomfish had just opened and halibut had just gone up to 2 a day. Checked the surf sites and the wind and seas looked ok. Unfortunately, that changed the day we were traveling. When we got there Monday all 3 trips had been canceled due to wind. Early Tuesday morning I drove the 12 miles to Depoe Bay to see if they were fishing and had room. Luckily I got on a salmon boat. The seas and wind weren't bad at all and the day turned out great, full limits for all 12 onboard. Nice grade of silvers. The was the last fishing for the trip as the wind got worse. We did do some crabbing off the docks and drank some good Rogue beer, relaxed and made the best of it. Of course, it settled down yesterday, the day we left for home.
