Leupold BX-4 Rangefinding Binoculars

Traveling kitty

That is a neat study. We seen one down by Indian Creek Road off the Little Missouri River, which is probably 30-40 miles to the Long Pines. I first couldn’t believe a lion would live out there, but there was a lot of whitetail and mule deer back then.

I think people would be shocked to know where they can and do live. I’ve found tracks multiple times out in gumbo flats miles from any “catty country”.

Same here. They end up way out in the prairie pretty frequently.

One was shot 3 miles north of me a couple weeks ago in corn country. Southeast Nebraska. We see them with some frequency due to the platte and Missouri rivers. Grey wolves from Minnesota are showing up a lot too.

Used to hunt acreage on the Red River north of town here. Beaucoup tracks, never saw one nor had one on game cams, but found a few deer carcasses cached. Can’t say I wasn’t jumpy walking in before sunrise.

Walking out one night leading my mule had one scream at us in the pitch dark. That mule turned into secretariat with me trying to hold on. Found out the next day we’d walked in on a fresh kill.

Oh man, had an owl screech right on top of me one pitch dark morning...the box blind was very nearly an involuntary outhouse.

Mountain lions are one animal that has always really fascinated me. I started deer hunting with family when I was 8 or 9 years old (am 30 now) and I have never seen a mountain lion in the wild. I know I’ve been in their area I’ve seen a lot of tracks but have never actually spotted one..

Kind of eerie to think How Many we all have walked by that seen us but we never seen them.

When I was in high school I was doing some night coyote calling. I didn’t have the fancy gadgets I have now for night calling. I had my spotlight with a red potato bag over the thing to dim it down. I was calling in some rough country and never did have anything come in but the hair on the back of my neck kept standing up. I finished my set and got out of there. Went up there the next day and had mountain lion tracks to a small clump of buffalo berry bush within 75 yards of me. Could see where he crouched down and watched some big dumb jackrabbit squealing away. I had no clue

I called one in hunting wolves once. Just saw a tail flick around some brush. Went back up the next day and he followed me all the way back to the truck without me knowing it.

I was laying in my hammock trying to fall asleep after a day of antelope hunting when I heard a scuffle and screeching coming from the dry creek bed I was camped along. Got up and shined my light into the bottom to find a lion munching away on it's catch. It ignored me and my light while eating it's meal 40 yards away on the opposite bank of the creek. When the cat was done it stood stretched and walked straight towards me. I went from being in awe to nervous real quick. When he hit the dry creek bed about 20 yards from me it turned and headed south walking right down the creek bed. The last I saw was it's long tail slipping into the tall brush. Didn't sleep in my hammock that night. The next day I checked out the site it had caught a racoon. I found tracks, scat, and some den areas. Even though the cottonwoods I was camped under were the only trees around I decided to relocate camp.20201001_203323.jpg20201002_140224.jpg20201002_140228.jpg

That’s a goal of mine to call one in and kill it. I’m fascinated with predator hunting

Had one follow my tracks in about a foot of snow one evening as I was packing out a quarter of elk. Found his tracks the next day, he went both ways in my tracks, kind of spooky when you think about it.
Another time I was hiking in the evening on July 4th, many years ago, had an open hillside on one side of the trail and dark sub-alpine timber on the other. Thought I heard a jake brake on a log truck, huh, no active logging in the area and a holiday, think that is a cat growling at me. Scooted right back down the trail to the truck.

I didn’t have a tag in my pocket unfortunately. I’d love to do it again with a tag.

The funny thing is I’m the worst coyote hunter in Montana.
