GOHUNT - Filter and find hunts like never before

Trapping Thread 2024/2025

Skinned the last coyote of the year tonight. Still feels nice even tho I skinned around 30 or so this year and years back would have been 75. Strange catch on This one. Had a catch like This about 10 years ago and both times the coyote hits the end of the cable dead very little fight. Maybe even less fight then a perfect behind the ear catch

Two more raccoons this morning in the dark. Both in blind sets again. One was on a remake and the other a new trap I put in the other day. Got to the creek and it was windy/sleeting already. I just knew something had to have moved last night.

I might dig in some pocket sets this afternoon for the weekend just to see if the change up helps, but I’ll pull everything on Sunday. My wife has been patient with me on these early morning checks, but I’d like to be able to help with the kids a bit more in the morning before work. Making plans to cover this area much better this fall.

I might toss out some footholds on drowners or conibear boxes in a few weeks so I don’t have to check them as often, but we’ll see. It’s been fun getting back into it a bit in the “offseason”. I didn’t realize how much I missed trapping.

Sounds like Sask is coming out of the Stone Age when it comes to snaring. We have always just been allowed to use RAM power snares. But sounds like they will be allowing us to use senneker style snares and lights out snares. Be cool to have new options. Won’t affect me I have 50 or so rams and can buy replacement. Snares for $2 each. About the same cost to build these new snares. But might be handy if a guy was just starting out much lower cost then buying a 30-40$ ram. Haven’t seen the Reg’s yet but what I’m excited for is hopefully they let us use a version of these snares for wolves. My limited wolf snaring experiences is you end up having to wire the ram up a tree a bit to get the correct height for you snare. And the cable is so short we had to use it was hard to get the ram semi hidden even. If that’s the case maybe I’ll have to make an effort to catch wolves next winter. Not many in areas I have permission but the odd one is around

I went three mornings with nothing caught and per my plan I pulled yesterday after work. Had to get creative pulling a few of the traps as the 24” rebar didn’t want to budge. All in all, I had a blast for the last two weeks! Ended up with 12 raccoons running the line for 12 days. The last three days were the only days I didn’t catch anything. This stretch of creek is a major raccoon highway as it lies between agricultural areas, near irrigation ditches and connects with the major area river nearby. It will repopulate quickly.

Do you all think Duke 1.5s are ok to use on groundhogs?
I don’t think there is much you cant catch in a 1.5 coil spring. But time in the trap and how it’s staked is going to play a big factor in holding it. That said, no experience with the Duke 1.5, but I can’t think a groundhog is going to test any trap that size all that bad.

Yes, but I’d try 220 conibear if I had a chance. The 1.5 should be good. I have to say that I never trapped a groundhog though.
I got access to two properties that are overrun with groundhogs. They are digging under the barn, sheds, and house foundations. Plus chewing through doors and getting into feed.

I’ve got some 220s I’ll be using, but these areas are so big I’m wondering if I can pull off the 1.5s too or if they were too small. I guess it doesn’t hurt to try!

I’m trying to figure out if I want to stake the 1.5s or just secure them with ground anchors.

My guess is the stakes will be fine, but the last thing I need is to get back out there and all of my traps are gone.

I’ve got about 20 1.5s that were given to me and I’ve always wanted to play with them. Now I guess is my chance. I’ll pair them with some 220s and who knows. Maybe I’ll catch one!

Sounds like you’ve got need for plenty of traps. Might as well try them! Stake them good and I doubt groundhogs will give you a run.

I’ve caught a ton in them. Place it way down in the hole so cats are minimal by catch. No need to really bury them, ground hogs will just walk over them and get caught. They are used to stuff being in the hole and will try and move it out and get caught. Stake it deep, a real leg catch and they will dig to china. A 90 degree hooked pitch fork works well to hook the chain and pull them out. You will need something as they will not be visible when you get to the set. They will make a burrow and hide in it.

Will there be an issue with barn cats or dogs?
No sir! First thing I asked!

Really good info, I appreciate it!
I’m also glad it works. I got access to these two places today because they are tearing up his stuff. He’s so happy that I can now turkey and deer hunt them. Just added about 240 acres to the list.
