Trapping Thread 2024/2025

Skinned the last coyote of the year tonight. Still feels nice even tho I skinned around 30 or so this year and years back would have been 75. Strange catch on This one. Had a catch like This about 10 years ago and both times the coyote hits the end of the cable dead very little fight. Maybe even less fight then a perfect behind the ear catch

Two more raccoons this morning in the dark. Both in blind sets again. One was on a remake and the other a new trap I put in the other day. Got to the creek and it was windy/sleeting already. I just knew something had to have moved last night.

I might dig in some pocket sets this afternoon for the weekend just to see if the change up helps, but I’ll pull everything on Sunday. My wife has been patient with me on these early morning checks, but I’d like to be able to help with the kids a bit more in the morning before work. Making plans to cover this area much better this fall.

I might toss out some footholds on drowners or conibear boxes in a few weeks so I don’t have to check them as often, but we’ll see. It’s been fun getting back into it a bit in the “offseason”. I didn’t realize how much I missed trapping.

Sounds like Sask is coming out of the Stone Age when it comes to snaring. We have always just been allowed to use RAM power snares. But sounds like they will be allowing us to use senneker style snares and lights out snares. Be cool to have new options. Won’t affect me I have 50 or so rams and can buy replacement. Snares for $2 each. About the same cost to build these new snares. But might be handy if a guy was just starting out much lower cost then buying a 30-40$ ram. Haven’t seen the Reg’s yet but what I’m excited for is hopefully they let us use a version of these snares for wolves. My limited wolf snaring experiences is you end up having to wire the ram up a tree a bit to get the correct height for you snare. And the cable is so short we had to use it was hard to get the ram semi hidden even. If that’s the case maybe I’ll have to make an effort to catch wolves next winter. Not many in areas I have permission but the odd one is around
