Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Trapping Thread 2024/2025

I’m not gonna lie. I might call MDC to come look before I shoot. Dogs are pretty protected here and I am not smart enough to know what this is. Parts say coyote. Others have me confused.

I’ve called more neighbors than you can imagine, but now I’m in my head. Everyone says they don’t have a dog, aren’t missing one, or know anyone who had one.

That's a coyote.
If you follow trapping forums they come in a wide array of color phases and body shapes even vary a bit location to location.

The whole "coydog" thing is largely B.S.

During my short time with the ODWC I know of one confirmed and at-least 2 others expected but not tested. So definitely rare but absolutely happens. The color phase is absolutely a possibility seems they're decently common in certain areas and almost completely absent from others. I've caught and killed hundreds of coyotes in Oklahoma and seen hundreds more never one color phase.

Sets dog proofs in the woods to keep them away from the foot holds….
Find them in the foot holds. 😂

Calendar year total:
Raccoons: 20
Possums: 14
Muskrats: 7
Beaver: 6
Otter: 1
Bobcat: 1
Coyote: 1
Skunk: 1
Armadillos: 2
Overall: 53

Bobcat, muskrat, and otter all go out Feb 28th.

Raccoon, possum, and coyote ends the 28th on public, but I have until April 14th on private for them all. So I’ll hammer everything until April 1st and then let it settle for turkey!

Are you staking all your traps around trees?
90% of my set ups are earth anchors.

I have some dog proofs attached to trees and two set bucket set ups attached two trees by chains.

After sending this picture to a few of my buddies I’ve been catching a lot of crap saying that coyotes can “break the chains” or “use it to get out.”

So I guess I need to reevaluate my methods. I truly figured the buckets would scare the coyotes and these would just catch bobcats.

I’m going to faint!
This was a bucket set I had imagined a bobcat would go after, not a coyote. I figured they’d freak out if they saw the bucket. View attachment 360340View attachment 360341
About 10 years ago we had a warm snap in the middle of winter. I went to one of my coon spots and set a 220 bucket set where I saw a coon crawl under a granary when I pulled in. The next day I was headed by there to go ice fishing and overnight a fox stuck his head in that 220 bucket

Some day I’ll get smart enough to use cable stakes of some sort. Until then, I’ll keep slinging rebar stakes.

I’ve got some 18” rebar stakes with a 2-3” washer welded to the top.

If I drove those into the ground would you say they are good enough for coyotes and bobcats?

They are just sitting there and need to be used.

Now that’s a cool experience right there!

Twice I've seen a single rebar stake pulled out by a coyote. If you're gonna use rebar get them setup to cross stake.master1_100127051_alt1.jpeg

I haven’t connected with a coyote yet. I use 24” stakes and have always cross staked a set of them when I set for coyotes. I just don’t want to take the change of them working that stake up, as I’ve heard they can.
