I have a friend who has a cool Topo Program on his Samsung phone called Back Country Navigator Pro. Real neat program.

I was curious if anyone has used this program and more importantly, does anyone know if there is a similiar program or app for an I-phone??

Thanks for any insight if you know of any.

I use BCN exclusively, got rid of my Garmin because of it. Works awesome you can add public/private land overlays, game units, topo's aerials, and a lot more. I believe there is a program for iPhone called Trimble Outdoor Navigator, Gaia GPS is another for both iPhone and Andriod but not sure on the features of either. Backpacker GPS also works for both, I have it on my Andriod but don't use it due to BCN being better imo

Cabelas hunt recon, I think it's the same as Trimble outdoors though so either or shall work.

I ran into a guy on the mountain the other day who was using his phone as well. This might only apply to the Montana guys but his was called the "Montana Parcel App" I found that it only is available for android. It was a google earth setup with ownership views. Sorry Critter a little off topic for the iphone question but I thought I'd throw it in the mix for android guys.

I use it and it has worked exceptionally well. I wasn't aware there was a landownership overlay, which would be awesome. Using a Samsung Galaxy S4 for a GPS is awesome with the screen size and resolution, so much better than a GPS unit IMO. I need to check out the add ons and see how they work. I bought the Hunting Maps GPS app for Android but with hunting season largely over for me I haven't had too much time to experiment with it.

How well are these apps working in areas with poor or no service? How bad are they running your battery down as well?

BCN and most of the others don't require service to work. You download the map area you want before you head out and then bring it up and start up your gps once to the area you are hunting. It will drain you batter some because you are running gps and another program but I don't have mine on all the time, I just mark my waypoints that I need and go then turn it on if I need to figure out were to head or something. You can also get a New Trent battery pack and take w/you if you want to leave it on all the time and just charge your phone that way.

Running only BCN with my phone in airplane mode and dimming down my screen I was getting about 1.5 days of use out of it with it running most of the time with constant checks and toggling between the TOPO map and the Satellite view.....also more extended viewing when I was in camp trying to figure out a game plan.

Extra batteries are a good option if you are packing in, they are pretty cheap. Since we had a base camp, I brought an Anker Battery Pack to recharge and it lasted me the entire week to recharge my phone.
