Leupold BX-4 Rangefinding Binoculars

Thinking about a redundant wildcat

I've been going this over and over in my head and I think I've come up with one that'll be easy on the wallet and fit my needs.

I can't find anything on 9.3x62 wildcats, so this is me asking about it. I want to neck that case down to 7mm and sharpen the shoulders to 30 degrees. Has that been done?

Check out the 7x64 Brenneke. It's 2 mm longer, but same concept. I think you could gain a touch more velocity than the 280 with the (.3 wildcat, but it may end up being just about the same thing. The 280 case is 63 MM long versus the 9.3. The 280 AI then would be the best step up from the 280 before you hit belted magnum territory.

Already ahead of you on that front. The 7x64 practically interchangeable with the 280 ballistically. The whole premise of this wildcat idea is to make a wildcat I can seat out to the lands in a standard tikka magazine (3.4"), which the 7x64 cannot typically do without running past mag length.

Since the 9.3's case is 2mm shorter (or more if I trim some off the top), I'd be able to have better performance than a 280 while not being restricted by the magazine like the 280AI, which I did run into when I had a 280AI barrel for my tikka.

I've only got one wildcatt, only one I ever had. 6.5x06. What I really like is the 6.5 bullets, they are no better and no worse than most any othe bullet. But the thing about the cartridge is case's. I can't buy 6.5x06 loaded ammo that I know of but doesn't matter as I reload my own. I have 30-06 case's coming out my ears they are so common so never a problem finding cases. How common are the european case's your looking to build a wildcatt on?

They're fairly common. I'm going to be looking at Norma cases if I go this route.

What about a 375 Ruger necked down to 280?

You could use the Weatherby RPM case as the parent.
Essentially a lengthened 284 Win.
So you'd have the 0.473" rim, but 0.500" body.
Giving you increase in case volume over something based on the 06' case even if it is in the improved configuration.

I had talked about that earlier in the thread and it's a solid solution, but brass is not readily available and I don't want to make a neck out of a part of it that wasn't supposed to be a neck.

How much are you planning on shortening it?

Bear in mind i've made 6.5mm Rem Mag cases from 7mm Rem Mag.
From a forming perspective, a huge change in case length!

Forming a wildcat is, what it is.
Making a neck where there wasn't one is a simple ID ream away.
Or you can OD neck turn.

sorry, a drawing without measurements tells me nothing.

Akin to me running a CNC machine going by a drawing with no measurements.

So I ran some internal ballistics. Barnes 145LRX RE26

284win 3.38OAL: 63.5gr- 3182fps
The first drawing, shortened 270 case 3.38OAL- 60.4gr- 3168fps
280AI 3.38OAL- 65.1gr- 3220fps
9.3x62 based 3.38OAL- 62.8gr- 3200fps

I'm taking it a 24" barrel length?

And my COAL for 162gr ELDX is 2.995".
Your 3.38" COAL would possibly more appropiate if you were running something like the 190gr Berger or 197gr Sierra.

You know, I had the COAL shorter and changed it and forgot to check what the seating depth was at.

Wait, woah, plenty of great concepts here, but what about a 6.5mm-300wsm. Like a .264wsm, does anyone already do that? Sounds wicked.
