The verdict is in...

I must be doing it wrong. Really happy with my old boat I rebuilt and repowered.

My old boat came with an equally old 2-stroke johnny. It ran but was a pain to work on and dial in. I looked at buying a newer used motor but the prices were too close to just buying new. Ended up with a brand new merc and love it. No different than hoping in my truck and turning the key - fires up and you're off. Price tag stung a bit, but I figure theres 20 years of fun to be had and I know the motors history. I can do basic maintenance and the boat being rebuilt gives a very reliable, safe, fun platform for years to come.

I love this.

I'm tempted to do a reconfiguration of the interior to improve storage space and move the gas tank out of the bow and place it on the centerline. EVA foam instead of carpet and do some rewiring while I'm tearing it apart. Probably 2-3 years out from that though.

I'm in the same sad boat as you. My 90 Etech has been trouble for years. Worth nothing now, I will pay off the truck by fall and hopefully will be getting a new Suzuki or Yamaha next year.
Mine is a rebuilt Ficht 150. The lower unit is out of it. I was hoping to find a whole unit with a bad head for less than a grand and swap the lowers. But people are awfully proud of their crap motors. I’ll be better off to repower and I can redo the transom while the motor is off.

I’m in the market for a new motor too. I’m looking for a 135-150hp. Currently have a an Evinrude ( that meme hurts, @Keep on) but since they went out of business I’d like to repower to a different brand.
My buddy has an old 91 Ranger. 629 I believe. He just broke down and put new motors on it. He went with a Suzuki 150 with a 9.9 kicker. He hasn’t had them long but loves them so far. They were cheaper than the Honda and Yamaha and with a better warranty. Plus the fact that they hardly use any gas compared to his old 2-stroke.

I want to look at a Suzuki when I worked at that resort in college they had Suzuki’s on a few of the boats and they would flat outrun the others even though they were the same hp. Yamaha and merc are the closest dealers to me by an hour so that adds into my decision.

FFF rule.

Just be transparent on that last F I recently learned. :D

Interesting. Wasnt there some doug guy for takes like this?

Doug had one too many hot takes.

I reconfigured it but I went from the rear fuel tank, to a mid-forward one, sunk down as low as I could to the bottom of the hull. A below deck fuel tank would have been custom. Best deal I found on the 75hp merc I got was through basspro. Only difference between the 75hp and 90hp is an intake baffle (restrictor) and the ecm is flashed differently. Runs great with a 15p black max AL prop.

I was also considering a honda or yamaha F70, really wanted the F70, but never got a response from any local dealers I reached out to. Almost a year later Yamaha reached out from a corporate level - too late and too bad. That F70 is the weight of a 60hp merc with 10 more ponies.

One deciding factor for merc too was the valves. Supposed to not need adjusting ever - self adjusting. The yamaha and honda are supposed to need yearly adjusting, which Im sure almost no one does.

Also the 75hp and up mercs are still made in Fond du Lac, WI - American Made.

The EVA foam floor I used was knock off hydroturf from the online jungle. Highly recommend over carpet - well worth it. I am carpet-less.

A buddy described boats as golf
He went with a Suzuki 150 with a 9.9 kicker
When I was on the hunt for boats, reviewing motors I was surprised (as a noob) to find Suzukis are a highly rated outboard right along with Yamaha and Honda!

One good day on the water makes it all worth it
It's like golf beaten over 15 holes! Yet... The three holes of tuned pitch perfect sounding strikes that land beautifully make golfers hackers return for 15 holes of arse whooping, frustration, throw the iron in the pond - wash, rinse, repeat.

Reality, buy new.

Or, if you're looking for flipping great outboards, seized in drug busts, etc... look no further than:
