I also think the boots made a difference. The altra hiking boots MtnElk was wearing have a real soft sole and low ankle. I was wearing my schnees beartooth 2s with sturdy soles, a solid toe box, and lace up to mid calf. I could jam a toe or side of the boot in the soft stuff and have a stable platform to stand on.

The altras were definitely the best boot for Wyoming but did not hack it in the steep slippery slopes of Colorado.
even as someone who hunts in running shoes as long as humanly possible you are absolutely right about this, having a rigid, sharp-edged sole is where it's at when it gets steep and muddy, these days I wear microspikes a fair bit as well, especially in blowdowns, it's nice to be able to step on snowy logs without falling and breaking your femur

Cheese pizza warned MtnElk that he would likely need micro spikes and an ice axe to hang with me Friday morning… the micro spikes are definitely a good investment. They are always in my truck this time of year

Congrats on the elk!! This has definitely been an interesting adventure for sure. Hopefully the next tags go a little smoother. Good luck to both of you!!

I told @MtnElk I would not shoot a cow or raghorn on day 1 of my hunt if he filled that tag. And boy does that really go against my hunting style! That means it’s a big bull solo day one or MTNElk holding my bullets once he gets there in day two. I don’t like passing up opportunity on an e/s tag

MEGA BULL or nothing. I want to be hurting from carrying out 200+ lbs of meat my friend. We both have 140lbs of fresh elk in the freezer, let's go after some glory.

Said many, many a hunter before hunting a unit that maybe has no 'glory' bulls or precious few only to later play the woulda shoulda game. Kill a good representative for the area and be happy (and tired).

I'm not sure what type of award this thread will be awarded by the powers that be, but it darn sure has earned some type of award! Congrats on all the success so far, @Dsnow9 and @MtnElk!! Best of luck on the rest of the tags!
I second that remark! Maybe a new category for "Perseverance in hunting" is required!

oh totally, that was mostly a joke between Deacon and I. You see, at this point, chasing glory is basically a barely legal bull at this point since Deacon is normally a "brown and its down guy". Which is why I was SHOCKED when he told me to pass on the cows the first time.

Hahahaha glory is all relative, I don’t think you even take pictures of the bulls I would shoot. Much less the ones you actually shoot. Time will tell.

Great story, guys, and it's just terrific that after a fair bit of adversity you were successful. This is the kind of stuff that makes great memories, in a few years, anyways......

The chains on Toyotas thing is interesting. I've been trying to figure out myself how I'm going to do with my new to me 04 4runner. That upper control arm in front is really close. I've got one set of chains on the way, and likely I'll just use them on the rear tires if needed, as I can't really see any way they'll fit on the front.

I'm going to be out and about in 3rd season, in the northern half of the state. If its like other years, they'll likely not be needed, but if a guy needs them he needs them pretty bad.....
