The 8 Year Wait...

Pretty much rinse and repeat for Monday except nothing shows up in the spot for the morning hunt. Not even the small group of does with the 3pt. Now I’m starting to stress a bit.

I start cruising roads again a round 9:30 and see a couple guys at camp that are tagged out and BS with them for a bit. They were tickled pink with the bucks they shot. Real nice guys and the dad was pushing 80. They weren’t getting far off the road but did pretty good. I helped them load them in their truck and they passed on some info of an area they were seeing lots of deer.

I went there for the night. Saw another handful of deer but nothing special. They were hanging out in these Christmas tree hillsides and can be challenging to pick up till you catch a doe moving.IMG_4597.jpegIMG_4590.jpegIMG_4595.jpeg

Monday night I was really debating going back this morning. I start talking with people that know deer. Will that buck be back? Why would he let that 3 pt around his does? The consensus is, if you want him stay after commited.

I’m thinking I’ll give him one more morning. There was some weather coming soon. If it came down to it I would wait for fresh snow and try and cut his track.

I show up at first light this morning and get into position well before shooting light. This hunt is reminding me of my youth chasing whitetail. Patients.

As daylight approaches I begin to glass and see a couple does. But this time they’re whitetail does. They seem a little unsettled with me poking my head over so I back off and give it 5 minutes.

The next time I look over they’re out of sight so I move to a better vantage. Instantly see two MD does coming from above into the sage. THERE HE IS. I range him, 300 yards. IMG_4625.jpegIMG_4622.jpegIMG_4637.jpeg

Too many people to thank but I’ll get to that soon. I put a lot of pressure on myself with this tag. A lot to ask of my wife and family to spend time across the state. I also tried to remind myself to enjoy the ride and I think I got everything I was looking for out of the experience.

For now I’ll soak it in for one more night.IMG_4653.jpeg

Congratulations!! That’s a beautiful specimen. Thanks for taking us along. And I’d say you bested your dad’s buck (B&C wise)… couldn’t believe you passed him early and glad you turned him back up!
