Tariffs

Some of our suppliers (medical) have warned about potential higher costs, but of the products we get that are manufactured outside the country and relatively inexpensive to begin with so I'm not seeing it have a material effect, but still remaining cautious about potential blindspots. It's not clear either if medical supplies will be exempt either, so everything is clear as mud.

Our Costco bill has remained relatively the same. I know Costco is adapting to the shift based on tariffs.

I personally do not believe there has been enough time to feel the inevitable impact. To me, it's worth the portion related to China and India who has consistently maintained higher tariffs than our own.
I would much rather deal with an economic trade war with China than boots on the ground proxy wars that lead further into the weeds direct wars, such as past global minerals. I'll spend additional money on items versus body bags.

VAT/Sales Tax play two separate factors yet hold an economic nexus. I believe this is the area where the triggers are pulled and we feel the pinch further.

This is the non political expression of my personal experience/opinion of tariff impacts.

Medical supplies shouldn’t be included in this. Those crooks would jack the price up not matter what’s happening

90% of natural gas is domestically produced; about 10% comes from Canada. We exported much more in 2024, 9% more than the previous year. Global prices, due to demand for both manufacturing and heating, also increased, and January was colder than average.

Might be some price gouging in your area though; avg retail up $2.51/gallon vs. $2.44 last year, or perhaps you don't have pipelines and shipping costs are up as well?
Well my forgive my ignorance of the propane supply process, or even natural gas for that matter. All I know about petroleum products is that my diesel comes out of the ground, goes through an extensive process and ends up in a tractor or a truck. Propane gets here in a bobtail truck, goes into my tanks and feeds whatever it's connected to. My delivery driver said that most of their propane comes from Canada. I have used Ferrel gas off and on for years.

My current employer is floundering do in large part to the fallout from inflationary price increases back in 2023 that were mismanaged. And we are just now beginning to get tariff price increases from our suppliers, so I am sure that is going to help that situation out.

I am looking for a new job since I don't have any confidence in the mid- to long-range health of my current employer. My take on the job market in my field is like being on a raft in choppy waters.

There was a decent amount of postings and interest in September and then in October it was like the tap shut off. I took that as a pause to see what would happen with interest rates and the election.

In late November it seemed like things picked up again, but ti was very short-lived, due mostly to the lack of business getting done over the holidays..

In January, things started to pick up and I felt like I had a real good shot at a nice step forward in my career, but per the recruiter that company does business on several continents and the tariff situation had caused them to pause all of the near-term plans as they worked through the impacts.

I have had quite a bit of other interest and interviews in the weeks following that missed opportunity, but I should note that in the last two weeks, it is like the tap has shut off again. Very few new postings and a lack of interest in my skill set. I feel like that is tied to the overall lack of clarity in which way the economy is going. Tariffs are announced, then rolled back, then new tariffs are announced.

It is not a good environment for business leaders to make good choices and it will have effects that may not be realized in prices for months.
What type of business?

It pays to shop around when buying your propane. Also summer prices tend to be much cheaper than winter prices.

My wife’s Toyota 4Runner has needed replacing for a while now. She has been waiting for the 2025 to finally come out. Been waiting for one to come in that was the color she wanted. Dealer would not take deposit over the phone, so we cut out vacation short and drove there to put a deposit down. Just our luck, the guy said it already sold (which really pissed me off). All the dealers we have been talking to said there will be a 25% price increase due to tariffs. So yesterday we signed for on that was everything she wanted but in a different color.
I know there are Toyota manufacturing plants in the US. Not sure if dealers are panicking people into sales or what.

My brother is a Toyota salesman up here. Shoppers are panicking themselves into sales. He told me yesterday that things were flying off the lot all week. He was down for the weekend and got half commission for 4 cars from 300 miles away.

I think he probably is paying for propane from Canada. His supplier should be able to reorient that supply change to US source pretty easy, but those US prices went up too. Because that's how capitalism works.

Willamette Pinot for you.

I was at an industry event in February and they threw out a note that only 27% of the wine consumed in Oregon is from Oregon 🤣

I've bought a of fair bit of Champagne this year, there's been some good producer direct shipments of past vintages that I jumped on simply for scarcity and provenance. With the tarriff announcement/threat a couple of weeks ago, I got lucky. It'll be interesting to see what this does to the secondary market for highly desireable wines from Europe. Apparently this will be great for the Champagne industry in the US according to Trump.....I never knew we had a Champagne industry.

Industry is relevant. I'd put money down that the California champagne industry produces more than the entire Oregon wine industry...

90% of propane consumed in the US is produced in the US. The propane industry is not the most ethical industry out there. It pays to shop multiple suppliers, and I always filled my tank in the summer when prices are lowest. Much more demand in the heating season as this chart demonstrates.

Friend of mine that owns an archery shop put out a post a couple weeks ago advising customers that prices on lots of things will be going up from his distributors due to tariffs. He has also been trying to advise on products that are made here and shouldn’t see an increase

If the reciprocal tariffs do go into effect, and stay long term - then short term pain with long term gains as more companies on source. Short term look for companies to take advantage and raise prices and blame tariffs.

Not really sure, but I haven't bought any big-ticket items in a while.

I have just become accustomed to increasing the budget in a lot of places every month.

Looking back to July 2024, the same $1100 we had for shopping then, as we do this month is not going quite as far. We are going to have to cut some stuff out, or make adjustments somewhere.

Not Tariff related, but our Amazon Prime and Music has gone up. Car insurance has gone up, and I expect it to rise again, despite older cars, and nothing on our records.

Medicare premiums went up this year, as well as health insurance.

I'll keep my spreadsheet and see what it looks like in a few months, year, etc.

Please don't make this a political pissing war. I'm wondering what impact any of the tariffs have had on you. I figured that based on our lifestyle and stage in life that the impact would be minimal. It's not a major impact but our propane bill went up by over $0.50 per gallon. The price has been pretty stable for years hovering around $2.35-$2.40 . This last fill was $2.97. I understand that most propane comes from Canada.

With anything fuel related in California you have to wonder about what types of phuckery from Sacramento could be in play.

My prices from Kamps have been pretty stable.

2/16/25 $3.54
1/9/25 $3.43
11/11/24 $3.44
5/14/24 $3.40
