I have recently acquired a Howa Superlite short with 16.25 " barrel in 308. My question is to those that have one...Big Fin...or anyone...what are you getting for velocities? I'm planning to shoot 165 gr Nosler whitetail country but don't have a chronograph and want to get an idea for a moa cheat sheet. I will get my own data after shooting, but am curious on velocities?? Thanks for any help!

That load specs at 2800fps from a 24inch barrel. You will probably be somewhere around 2600fps out of a 16.25 tube, but velocity/BC only get you started in establishing DOPE. Using Hornady's ballistic calculator, that would get you this data:

RangeVelocityEnergyTrajectoryCome Up (MOA)Come Up (MILS)Wind DriftWind Drift (MOA)Wind Drift (MILS)

9001196524.0-332.435.310.3000

As you mention above, getting your own data is imperative. Shooting in your DOPE is the only way to confirm the exact drop for your rifle, load and environmentals.

Shoot it and see where your bullets land on the target. Then you don't need velocity and you get practice and true data rather than theoretical data.

I have a 16" barrel in a Remington, the action really isn't important, but it is representative of what you are using. With a 175gr Sierra match king I am getting 2,400 FPS. That load is just for target-based shooting. For hunting I use a 150gr and keep the shots to a much closer range due to velocity on target for my criteria. The velocity on the 150gr class bullets are 2,550fps, as a point of reference for you.
