Gotta keep up with the times. The member formerly known as 4ohSick. It's just too ridiculous to not make fun of; I'm just surprised I was able to get it first.Which idiot here rebranded themselves as @Gulf of America? I'm losing track!
No idea, but it made me laugh out loud legitimately when I saw it. Some fast fingers around here.

I'm all for changing geographic names where appropriate, and have been involved in the process various times. This one is dumb as hell. The underlying principle of the Bureau of Geographic Names for establishing official geographic names or changing existing ones is recognition of present-day local usage or preferences. A friend told me he thinks it will go the way of Freedom Fries, and I think he's right.

Thank you. I always appreciate and respect a back story.I am not that invested either way, but did find the McKinley/Denali dispute interesting.
You are accurate the Obama did have the name changed. I do think that the history is interesting pertaining to the failed attempts of the AK legislature, as well as current/former AK senators and reps, attempting to have the Denali nomenclature for a few decades.
Thanks Obama, you evil bastard.
I appreciate your link. Here is another with more details. Be sure to check the legitimacy of the information as it is Wiki. Nothing jumped out at me, but maybe you disagree.

I mean, technically the shoreline mileage is almost a 50/50 split and he's only renaming the northern half to the international boundaries of Mexico and Cuba, so maybe it does need to happen
Need?
Trumps playing a game. He's clearly good at it - one of the best ever - and reversing centuries of toponym use to rah-rah some folks is and will be par for the course.
You know, "Gulf of Mexico" wasn't the original name either, it's about 6th or 7th on the list and wasn't a common reference until the 17th century, and "Gulf of Florida" was one of the names before that, maybe that's what we should call it now...
Think of it as a starting point for your research.Thank you. I always appreciate and respect a back story.
I have a hard time not throwing up reading anything Wikipedia has to say. I will suffer through this time for the sake of our conversation.

The gulf of WGAF, there, now we can all be friends again. You know, "Gulf of Mexico" wasn't the original name either, it's about 6th or 7th on the list and wasn't a common reference until the 17th century, and "Gulf of Florida" was one of the names before that, maybe that's what we should call it now...
While we are talking about changing names though, there's 989 Deer Creeks in this country. There's nearly 1500 Spring Creeks. We oughta winnow those down. Replace em with something more unique and meaningful. I love fun place names. Here in Montana, we've got the Angels Bathing Pool, Bloody Dick Peak, The Hog Heaven Mountain Range, etc. We need more one-of-a-kinds.
We have 3 bear creeks in our county. All in different geographic quadrants of the county. At my last unofficial count, I think Colorado has about 1,000 "Lost Lakes"...I hope they don't change "Nipple Peak" though, it's probably not unique but that one always gets a chuckle
