Splitting points in WY

You’re literally putting a price on the one thing you can't get more of...time.
I have plenty of time, I’m 30. I’ve had 2 general tags in the last couple of years. Just addicted to going and I want to guarantee going back. I don’t have a ton of free spending money so giving someone $2500 is out of my range, not an insult if I can’t afford it. Just not that dire to be broke to go elk hunting

I have ten points and knew nothing on splitting points but I have paid a $2000 dollar deposit to one of Wy outfitters for 2025 simply because I know nothing about the units and I'm paying what may be once in a lifetime hunt for me, so just having a tag is not going to do much for me because like I said I know nothing of the unit but if someone splits the points and finds someone with knowledge to hunt with I can understand cheaper than 7200 plus tags and fuel
If your outfitter is doing your application and it’s a general unit make sure he is not party applying you.

I've been legit offered that as well as an outfitter that has offered me a free 2x1 backcountry hunt to use my points to get one of his clients a general tat.

So actually yes, $500 plus per point x 5 is $2500 and about the normal going rate
I have enough to put 2 other guys over the top into a general tag that would be a hard offer to turn down for a backcountry hunt like that

If this is a general unit do I not lose all my points if drawn for a tag regardless of who files the application thats the way it was in Colo
Yep you will lose all your points. But if your outfitter is applying for you he's going to find 2 or 3 other guy's who have no points and apply them with you in a party and charge those others probably thousands of dollars for the privilege of being on your party app. Read this thread there are outfitters that will literally offer you a free outfitted hunt for that deal.

If you apply in Colorado as a party you go in at the lowest application points number or you’d see this shit there also

I've learnt a lot reading this thread! I had 9 elk points for my daughter that I let go a couple of years ago. If I'd known about this splitting business I could have helped someone out. Personally I wouldn't have feel right profiting off the points.

have a flat lander friend 73 year old with a lot of western hunt experience with 16 WY nonres elk points. An outfitter is offering him a guided 5-day fully hunt in a Gen area on private land pre rut only ending by Sept 10 in a Gen area south of Afton if he shares points with his clients.

thoughts on better way to use them? Just seems a poor choice. he of course wants a quality hunt and not seeing a DIY draw hunt option. I think he is a little too focused on unreachable top tier (huntin fool nonsense) tags he will never draw. He also sees the end of ability for mountain hunts looming bc of age etc.

To me 5 days is a SHORT ELK BOWHUNT. And too short to burn 16 points. I would personally want more hunt time even if DIY on the property after the guided portion or would want to have my own plan to hunt public later on and during latter part of Sept. Outfitter could just about get two paid hunters with a point or two each out of this guys 16 points. That is a lot of outfitter upside.

I think if it was me I would want to split with a great hunter in a good area that committed to helping him succeed. Or split with an outfitter working a limited unit with a hunter just a little short of needed points. That in some way may open \up the DIY portion of hunt if needed to be in a better area with fewer public hunters?

Thanks for the info as I said I have 10 points and a friend of mine has 5 so I knew there was some way my points would help him I have archery hunted elk for 33 years in Colo. and taken 18 elk but never the big 6x6 I wanted alot my fault I guess because with the limited time I had each year if I saw elk coming and it was legal I was planning a shot not what was coming behind, so this year I retired and wanted to do a horseback pack in trip hoping for a better bull this also is my first rifle hunt for elk so I went with what Wy calls one of the premier outfitters next to Yellowstone so at 65 years old and not knowing anyone in Wy felt it was my only option. Thanks again for the info I will be watching this thread and may be able to bargain a little knowing this Thanks

I'm amazed that someone would occur over 10-19 points. They could have hunted WY for 3-4 times during that period, when it only took 2 points to draw a general elk tag for few years ago before Randy, Steve, and others started promoting WY

Depends on what you want with it. I was chasing a tag now I have enough for it and don’t want it so I’ll buy more this year and try and figure out a new plan. I hunt elk every year I can wait for Wyoming and get the hunt I want

I'd bargain a lot if I were in your position, plus if he was going to party apply you and not tell you about it then that gives you a little insight into the kind of person you are dealing with. Hope you have an awesome hunt!

It isn't all that crazy. The WY general tag isn't necessarily a slam dunk hunt with everyone shooting 250+ inch bulls. Some areas can be pretty crowded and it based on some of those areas I've experienced, its not easy hiking to get into where the elk are.

10 years ago, some really great hunts, like in the Bighorns for example, only took 6-7 points to draw. For someone that started building points 10 years ago, waiting 4-6 more years to hunt there and have a high quality hunt with a good chance at a quality bull was worth the wait. Fast forward 10 years and those hunts now take 10-14 years and they are still chasing that dream.

I agree, and I see no problem with the original post, its legal and the guy with the extra points is getting something instead of losing the extra points. personally, I would be glad to hunt with the guy with the extra points in the area I'm familiar with if he needed a place to hunt.

For real, if a local guy, say Buzz, came to me and said hey, I can get you on a really nice 3x3 with 12 inch tines and all you have to do is party apply with me and my friends and shares points, we will get you a nice deer....I would of course do it. Maybe Randy/Marcus/Michael needs someone to hunt with ...hm.....
