When my kids are ready to evolve past the Spider-Man poles/reels with bobber and worms I’ll start investing more in fishing. Until then, the squirrel fund will be towards stuff they can do - like coyote hunting.Scrap the whole project, buy a two hand fly rod set up and get fishing.
Yeah, maybe a little partial.![]()
8 lb jug of H4350 and 500 77gr TMK so far…I would do #1, quickly find a load that's good enough, then purchase sufficient quantities of those components to last the life of the barrel.

My oldest (6) has gone with a few times, and then watched a YouTube video… the next morning he asked if we can make a coyote blanket and has now asked for a stretcher and fleshing knife for his birthday. So we’re going head first into coyote hunting. He’s also primed to go bear hunting next month - already called dibs on the bear skin.
The boys got a .223 Tikka Compact last year from grandpa. It’s been cut/threaded and it’s a BLAST!If I was going to barrel swap it would almost certainly be a 223. I know it’s not as fast or fancy but tons of available ammo is a nice problem to have
Currently putting lipstick on my pig of a .223. Different brand but swapping a used-heavier, fluted barrel on it. I’m getting excited. I took it to my machine shop just to chase the receiver threads out as the previous owner kinda hacked it. Shop owner asked if I wanted the other end of my “plumbing project” threaded too. I digress against @Potsie ’s thread but I sure like how easy .223’s make fun.If I was going to barrel swap it would almost certainly be a 223. Paul cut/threaded that .223 of mine, and a .223 bolt gun with a can on it is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.Currently putting lipstick on my pig of a .223. I’m slightly gun shy from the last deposit I put down on a fly out caribou hunt. The “subsistence board” BS hurt and from the sounds of it there’s still plenty of operators dropping people 800 yards from another camp up there on the state ground. Not interested in a fly-in KOA adventure.Option 4... put deposit on a flyout caribou/moose hunt in AK or some other adventure?
Essentially since it’s a used barrel, I’m going to see how it shoots first. I might be dumb to pull it apart again later to have it threaded but I just don’t want to invest much in this barrel I’m starting to regret buying.Paul cut/threaded that .223 of mine, and a .223 bolt gun with a can on it is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.
So option #1 is keep it .22-250, cut/thread + DA Nomad TI can or new can about to hit the market.
My thinking is keep it a .22-250, brass/dies are already a sunk cost, and barrel life will be longer. I can play with a wildcat once I toast the barrel and have to replace. Plus a second (and better) can would be a nice add.
I recently did option 3 I took a tikka 22 250 and had it reamed to a 22 creed fortunately the barrel is a shooter. I am sending 75 eldm out of a 18 inch barrel at just under 3300 fps.
RL26 is unicorn dust.SRP brass and RL26?
