Just got back from a weekend of deer hunting in South Alabama. I hunted with all of my brothers and nephews. This is the first time we have all hunted together in years. It really pressed upon me how important it is to make time for this no matter how hard it is to schedule. We hunted one of the WMAs 4 hrs South of where we live. It is more of the classic Southern landscape you guys think of, with live oaks and spanish moss. The deer were moving and alot of bucks were killed over the weekend. Our group ended up with one nice buck, a 5 pt, and 5 does. A few of the guys are still hunting. Randall shot a nice 8pt this morning, but I am still waiting on its photos. Hope you guys enjoy the photos.

Very nice, I have hunted Barbour County and that brought back some good memories! Congrats, was the Rut still going on or just coming in? John

It's always fun to see something new and different. What is the preferred hunting tactic? Stands, stillhunting?

Great buck, and good on you for making time for family.

Really nice buck, congratulations. I've found that I don't kill as many animals during these family type hunts but they are my most ''Successful''.

Tell me about your Mauser.

The rifle is a Browning Hi Power Safari Grade 30/06. It was made in 1964.

The rut was just starting to wind up. There were scrapes everywhere. I am pretty sure the doe I shot was hot, but she didn't have anything behind her. There was alot of guys on the ground, so the deer were stirred up and moving all the time.

Well done! My brother moved to AL a couple of years ago. I really need to look into the WMAs down there. I'd be up for a road trip in January as most things here have closed by then.

Wow, very impressive haul. I lived for 5 years in central AL and had some very memorable hunts on both Barbour and Lowndes WMA. The way they restrict the gun hunting really lends to some quality action late in January when the bucks lose their minds. Thanks for sharing!

JLS, we mostly stand hunt. But alot of guys have started pushing through recent cutovers and jumping deer. Its pretty risky because you can harvest a buck and a doe per day but the buck has to have 3pts on at least one side. We usually hunt thick areas that are used as escape cover or bedding areas for the deer, so once the guys start bumping them they are moving alot.

1 ptr, as mentioned Barbour and Lowndes are the best in the state for numbers of deer and quality of bucks. If any of you guys are considering a Jan hunt, let me know I would be willing to point you in a direction to get started.

Nice bucks! What WMA were you hunting in south alabama? I live in the southern part of the state and spend alot of time hunting and fishing in the Mobile Tensaw delta. By the way, nice Auburn hat!!
