Since I really only got the itch for hunting Coues deer from watching Randy’s show a decade or more ago (who knows when those first Coues deer shows aired ???), it only felt right to do a little semi live recap of how things unfolded on my FIRST rifle hunt for Coues. I’m not sure I ever knew Coues deer existed bedore Randy introduces me to them all those years ago.

I did try archery hunting them about 5 years ago, with a buddy, and we overthought things and ended up finding deer on day 3 out of a 4 day trip. Of course we never filled any tags but we sure had fun escaping the winter weather from up north.

This time, I burned 11 bonus points on a late December tag. I had no desire to ever accumulate 11 points but mainly it’s always been tough for me to save vacation to do a late December Coues hunt! It’s also tough to want to tackle that 2 day drive from my home in Wyoming, in the middle of winter.

I had planned on burning those points at 7 points, and 8, and then well I had to just put my foot down and say “I’m going Coues deer hunting in 2024!”

Season opened on the 13th and would in until the end of the month. I had originally planned to head down there on the 14th and hunt until the 23rd. I had been able to tack on days as I ended other hunts earlier than anticipated this year, and had almost the entire season off! The plan was I was going to return home on the 23rd, spend Christmas with the family and head back south for the second leg of the hunt if I needed to.

Well…my wife had made plans in Midway, UT to go see Christmas lights and do other christmassy things with her family for that first weekend, and kind of expected I wouldn’t go. With our son (our only child) being almost 1 1/2, that was hard for me to want to miss…so I didn’t. I figured I had plenty of time to hunt and the hunting would only get better, the later into December we got. We headed down to midway Friday after work, her in her car, and me loaded down for a week of Coues hunting after that. We hung out in midway until about noon on Sunday and headed our separate ways.

I made it to flagstaff that evening about 8:00. I stopped at wal mart for my groceries and got a hotel room for the night. I hate getting hotels but I didn’t want to unload my truck for a place to sleep.

Up at 5 AM I continued south. I learned that I will never drive through Phoenix again unless it’s in the middle of the night. I hit Phoenix about 8:00AM and that was a mistake. I got stopped on the interstate multiple times…just terrible.

Anyway I arrived at camp a bit after 11:00 and had camp set up by 1:00IMG_9617.jpeg

That evening I headed to a predetermined glassing spot on the map. It was about two miles in and 1600 feet of elevation above where I needed to park. During late November and all through December, I dealt with back to back TO BACK illnesses. Little man is in daycare so I seem to be the recipient of all the crud. I knew it would be a rough start to this hunt having really not done much for the better part of a month. It was.

I spotted my first Coues of the trip on the walk up, a couple does, but being a rookie, I pushed on wanting to make it way over to that high peak. I spotted another Coues at the base of the steep stuff as I hiked up…another doe, and again, I pushed on.

From my almighty glassing spot that I just had to get to, I spotted exactly 0 Coues deer during the last hour of light. My thinking was I outwalked the water, and thus, the Coues. There must not be any water up this high on the mountain…or I’m just missing them.

Regardless, I had other pins very similar to this one that I had planned on hitting for the next few days. It made me kind of rethink that plan.

I learned my second very important lesson of the trip and that is to not take a different way down, than you took up, in the thick desert country. I thought it was an easier way down, according to the map. After I jumped off the first couple boulders, I should’ve known better. I soon found myself mid slope, not really able to go back up, and in a sea of boulders, thorny brush, and cactus. Absolutely miserable, I finally had to hit the valley bottom, which was a dry creek bed, and rock climb out that way. It took me 2 hours to go 1/2 mile

A nice scenic picture I took back before the hike took a turn!

Day 2/ First morning

I was a bit gunshy after the evening before and decided on an “easy hunt” but still one I thought would be very worthwhile. It was just a little knob down in the lower, thicker country where I had spotted all the Coues the day before. It was also around a couple tanks so I just wanted to see if maybe “higher wasn’t better” like I’d been thinking leading up to this hunt.

I glassed up some mule deer on the way in, but when I got to my glassing spot I immidately spotted a big group (6 or so) Coues does running from right to left about 800 yards away. Hard for me to believe what they were running from me, but what else would they be running from. A bit later I glasses up a few more does on the same hillside.
IMG_9820.jpeg

Shortly after there was a Sonoran dik dik in the bottom of the draw and I then glassed up 2 does and a fawn in the thick bouldery stuff as the deer seemingly made their way onto the north facing slopes for mid day. Lots of deer! This was good!

IMG_9830.jpeg
For whatever reason, I turned north and started glassing the sunny slopes just for a change of pace. I was glassing 2+ miles away and thinking “no way I could see a Coues buck from this far”, when all of the sudden….i did! I thought maybe there was an outside chance it was a mule deer since I actually picked him out but he was moving like a whitetail and picking his head up like a whitetail. I could tell, even from that distance that he was a buck and that got me excited. I pinned him best I could and knew I couldn’t realistically get there anytime soon so he was my plan for evening.

Back to my task at hand, I continued to scour the close slopes and a little after 9:00 I glassed up this buck! He was the first decent buck I’d seen at any kind of close range and really, he was a thinker. He was a main frame 3x3 if you count whitetail like most people do. For some reason these Coues folks don’t count browtines…so they would say a 2x2. For simplicity, we’ll count tines like the rest of America counts whitetail lol. A 3x3 with a split g2 on one side making him a 3x4, but the split wasn’t big. Maybe an inch. It was my first morning and he didn’t get me overly excited, and of course I had just seen something it bought was big.

Same buck in all three pics

“Coues crossing” on my way out
IMG_9630.jpeg

That evening I went and glassed the north facing side of where I saw the big buck, thinking that’s where he’d hide. I glassed up 6 does and 1 small 2x2 or 3x2 buck. Not much of anything.

Day 3

Of course, with the “big buck” on my mind, the plan was to be within striking distance of where I saw him the morning before. The top of the opposite ridge put me over 800 yards from where I saw him, but there were a couple other little side ridges I figured I could hustle down to get within range if I needed to. I wanted to, of course, see as much as possible.

On my way up, I spotted a few does and one small buck with my naked eye…a first

I also spotted another buck a few ridges over. I was unsure how good but first impression told me he was a short tined 4x4. It’s so hard to get a good bead on what these deer, I wasn’t sure whether I should be trusting myself or not. I watched him hit a scrape and a licking branch, so I liked the fact there was an active scrape there. As for now, I had to stick to my original plan.

After getting preoccupied by deer for the first hour or so of daylight, I finally made it up to where I wanted to be. I immediately spotted a “good” buck. I quickly made plans to cut the distance but started to rethink things as I got my stuff together. Finally I just said “if you’ve got to talk yourself into it, he’s not good enough.” So I passed him. Same class of buck as the other I passed…I figure. A 3x4

IMG_9646.jpeg

Was this the “big buck” from the day before? I had my doubts, but it was a good buck in virtually the exact same spot.

I glassed around until mid morning and saw more does and one more Sonoran dik dik.

For the evening, I wanted to head back close to the spot I passed the first buck. It was a lot of north facing stuff and it just seemed like a good evening spot.

I glassed up merely a few does. No bucks and didn’t glass up the initial buck I passed either, but man it is tough to glass. It’s that bouldery, brushy stuff I’ve already posted pics of. Really tough to pick deer out of.

IMG_9835.jpeg

After that I decided I was ALL IN on the area I was in that morning. There were too many good bucks around and I figured my time was best spent hanging out in that area for the remainder of the first leg of my trip. There were enough ridge systems and knobs to keep myself busy.

Day 4

Same plan. Just different knob. I saw that other buck hit that scrape, I know there’s an active scrape, and I would like to get a better look at that whole area, including that buck if he’s still around.

I did things a little different in that I got up earlier to hike in, in the dark. Really, that’s what I usually do but after the Boulder filled night hike from the first morning, I had still been a little wary of night walking, but everything about this looked pretty tame so I went for it.

Also, from the main glassing knob I wanted to get to, it put me 350 yards from that scrape and I could see a lot of country. It felt good. It felt right!

The plan was to to be about a half mile short of that main glassing knob at legal shooting light. I was perfect, if not a little early. I spotted does. Does everywhere. I think I counted 18, but not a single buck. Not even a dik dik!

I didn’t take any time to get videos of does this time, I’m on my way up. I was set to a pretty strict timeline!

I tried to discreetly “nudge” those does along so I could get to my spot before the sun hit the hills. I hoped I did it good enough.

As soon as I arrived at the knob I spotted deer. Multiple doe groups and now being in this game for a few days, I had learned that these Coues does do not just stare at nothing. They’re pretty edgy. One doe I spotted was looking downhill to her right. I glassed there multiple times but couldn’t see anything. Finally I picked out a deer…another doe. She was looking uphill and right. “Oh more does. How did I not see them.” They were feeding but snapped a look downhill at the same time where the other doe was, that I had just looked at. And there, between the does I had already seen, was another deer in the wide open. It was all alone and with a bigger body. “That’s gotta be a buck.” Soon I saw antler tips moving as he fed and already having my spotting scope ready, I quickly got him in it. As soon as I did, he lifted his head and turned to face me. I saw a big brow tine and just went “YEP YEP YEP YEP!” He was on the hillside I expected and I quickly ranged him…286 yards “hell yea”.

Quickly and quietly I grabbed a shell from my shell belt and placed it in the chamber. I turned on the camera and told it how “there’s a big buck and I’m freaking out.” I then threw the camera in the grass. I tried to look for a spot to lay prone and didn’t see one. I scurried down the hill “no that won’t work. Nope. Too much brush. SH*T”. I shot a glance at the buck and he’s still looking my direction. I could sense my movement and noise up the hill was starting to blow this up. I scurried back up the hill to a rock and thought I could put my pack on it to get enough elevation for a prone shot. “Nope….SH*T (many more murmured explatives). Evidently prone isn’t going to work!”

I scurried to my tripod with my spotting scope still attached. I flipped it down to create a “V” and got behind it. I looked through my scope and it was BLACK!! “What the!” I reached for my scope cover thinking I had forgot something. It wasn’t there. I looked through my scope again…still black. I took my head away from the gun to look AT the scope and I see that the glass eye piece inside is completely sideways in the housing. “OH MY GOD. I’M GOING TO FINALLY GET MY CHANCE AND MY SCOPE IS BUSTED!” Luckily the glass piece hadn’t completely fallen out. Don’t ask me how. I pushed on it with my finger and snapped it back in to place best I could. It was still crooked in there…but it was there. I looked through my scope. “WOOHOO I CAN SEE!” It seemed a little foggy but I could see. “I hope this doesn’t distort my crosshairs or something funny”…was all I could think.

Regardless, it’s game time. The buck is still staring my way, still as a statue. I get over the tripod, look through the scope and think “put your second hash mark on his heart and let it go. My second hash mark is really 325 but I knew it would do fine at 290. I wasn’t super steady, and I jerked the trigger when the crosshairs were where I wanted them. Would I have hit him…I don’t know, but the gun didn’t go off! Did I just not jerk hard enough? I don’t know. I rushed to make sure the safety wasn’t on and pushed the bolt down firmly just in case. “Okay…let’s grab a back rest for the stock.” I grabbed my pack, stuffed it under my armpit, and got readjusted. “Yes…that’s steady. That’ll do it. Second hash mark low on his chest and squeeze this baby off” ….BOOOM …WHOP!..I see what I thought was the buck tumbling down the hill behind a tree.

I felt great about the shot but cycled the bolt. THE GUN JAMS! I don’t believe I short stroked it. Rather, I think since I stacked a fourth round on top of my three in the magazine, which I never do, the gun didn’t like it, and didn’t properly eject the spent shell. Regardless, we’re on for another rodeo. I’m trying my best to watch for the buck but also unf*ck another situation. Throwing both the spent shell casing and a live round I cycled the bolt again and got on target. Deer are running everywhere but they’re all does as far as I can tell. A minute or so looking at every deer that made sense, I don’t see any bucks.

I am shaking and just completely flustered, as you can imagine, and have to just take a deep breath. I would’ve liked to have watched for the buck, of course, but I didn’t do a great job due to the ridiculousness that took place. I have to just say “okay, you heard it hit him and you saw him flop. He’s hit hard, just go up there and see what’s going on.” So I made my way to the buck…and there he was…stone dead! No more drama.

He was nice. That’s all I could tell and when I got up to him I saw the split brow, the extras, and all the things that made this buck extra special. It was a dream come true!

Enjoy the pics!

PS- you feel a bit like jolly the green giant sitting behind these little deer, for a picture.IMG_9661.jpeg
My only hunting rifle is a 300 win mag. Some people have wanted to call me out that it’s overkill. Bummer.

Wow. Amazing buck and taken under some crazy circumstances. Congratulations.
Can’t say I didn’t bring some of it on myself but I feel so fortunate to come out successful in that scenario. It could’ve went south…it maybe should’ve went south but I am the proud owner of a great Coues buck after it’s all settled.

With that crazy stuff going on the right he might not net book but that is the first coues buck I’ve seen that just has the wow factor. Very nice buck and glad you were able to pull it off with all the crazy things happening.

I scored him at 100 2/8”. Inwas a bit conservative on the crazy side and just scored him the smallest possible way, which is probably how it would be scored… but regardless I was conservative and not making up a way to score him lol. But yes, bet he won’t be anywhere close.

Thank you! Of course, I’m no Coues expert but I haven’t seen many like him.

Hell of a buck and story congrats. I wanna go chase them buggers one of these years. Nice work!
