So you want to hunt the Bob? I wanted to show that while the backcountry is beautiful it is some gnarly thick crap that pretty much sucks most of the time.

I recently spent 8 days camping in the Bob Marshall as part of our work mapping the soils of the Lewis & Clark National Forest. I thought I'd share what an outfitted drop camp looks like through the eyes of one that has experienced 4 in the last 2 years. This particular trip was into the edge of the Bob as our work is non-wilderness at this time. We packed with A Lazy H Outfitters (Joe Haas) and there were 6 people on our crew that he packed in. Each day was about 10 miles of hiking plus digging holes and describing vegetation. On the 11th & 12th we got some small thunderstorm activity which sparked several wildfires which ultimately caused a shutdown of the area and our evacuation (even though we were on our way out already).

We use to hunt the north fork of the Sun in the Bob. It is beautiful country, but a lot of work to get all the gear and everything in there. We would take about 15 horses and go about 18 miles. But I have some great memories of it.

Looks like a lot of fun! Nothing better than riding a horse in good country, well elk hunting in good country I guess but if you cant hunt then....

You must have been near Grouse creek. I went into the "Bob" North Fork first time in the fall of 1973 and many times since. When I'm there it feels like I'm going home. Love that country.

We were camped at Beaver Lake (so eloquently called Beaver Fever Lake since it's so shallow and of questionable quality) which is near Muskrat Pass. There was no good fishing water nearby...Blue Lake may have had some fish but a 45 min walk kept it unexplored. Plus after a long day of hiking the last thing you want to do is hike some more to go fishing. Our free time was spent filtering water (since water borne illness would suck), making dinner, and preparing for the next day.
