Teal season opened here. I didn't get to go today, but my nephew gave me the report. He said it was OK huntng. But he was mad at some fellow duck hunters. He said they starte shooting a half hour early:mad: Said it sounded like a war zone. This should not happen because we all got cell phones and they have accurate times. Said the game warden was there and did nothing:mad: You guys think I'm right that there should be no confusion on time anymore?

Legal shooting time is 30 min. before posted sunrise time. Your nephew maybe had it wrong and thought shooting time started at sunrise? Wardens may give them a few minutes cushion, but surely not 30 minutes.

Early teal season starts at sunrise for identification reasons. The group next to me today started shooting about 20 minutes early plus shot at ducks other than teal. While I was waiting for legal time I heard the sound of a scanner coming from a vehicle. He watched them for quite some time before he put on his waders and gave them a visit. I'm sure it was an honest mistake but you would think that one of the group of three hunters would have known the start time was different than the regular duck seasons.

Thank you cornfed. Nice explanation. I knew my nephew would know.

I sat on a small marsh a few miles off the Mississippi near Bellevue. I was the only duck hunter, there were some squirrel hunters in the timber. I had ducks buzz me constantly before legal time. I am sure that a few of them were teal but I couldn't shoot. After sunrise I had mallards and wood ducks land ten yards in my decoys. My dog kept looking up at me with a look of disgust that I was not shooting. Hunters toward the Mississippi started shooting about ten minutes early for the teal season. If they were dove hunting they were fine though.

A couple years ago at Canyon Ferry I watched a group shoot 3 cormorants before legal light thinking they were geese. I just don't quite get it...

I had a situation about 6-8 years ago on an elk hunt that I laid behind my rifle for about 15 minutes with a cow in my scope to be legal, and able to see enough detail in the optic to guarantee shot placement. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, but well worth the wait.
